Carcassonne (2015) Reviews

Transport yourself to the old, medieval, hilltop town of Carcassonne, in this tile and worker placement game that has become an absolute staple of the board game world. Carcassonne is a game, suitable for 2-5 players, see players selecting a face-down tile from the centre of the table, and placing it to continue the landscape of the already-placed tiles on the table. This is the one key rule in Carcassonne. Roads must continue roads, castles must continue castles; you cannot cut off a feature. Then comes the key decision, do you place a meeple on one of the available features on that tile, that feature being anything from a road to a monastery, or do you keep hold of your meeples and await another placement opportunity that may yield more points? This dilemma is had by all who play Carcassonne and it is what makes this game so fiendishly fun. While the artwork and the general theme may be quaint and friendly, it is you, the player, who can turn that image around and become rather quite militant in your tile placing antics! You may see that a player is about to complete a castle feature and score a respectable eight points. However, you see an opportunity to steal said feature and end up placing tiles away from the feature, joining it up and stealing it from right under their noses, as you will have placed more meeples on that feature than them! This is just one of the many strategies one can employ while playing Carcassonne and something that sets this game apart. With its simple yet rich game mechanics and eighty-four tiles that can be configured into numerous combinations, Carcassonne appeals to beginners and veteran gamers alike. This edition is entirely redesigned and modernized, and includes two expansions: The River and The Abbot. This easy to play, fast-paced, family friendly game encompasses everything good about board gaming and will give you an experience you will cherish for many games to come! Player Count: 2-5 Time: 30-45 Minutes Age: 8+

We’ve playing this every day since getting it! A week ago…. Scoring seemed complicated at first glance but now we’ve got it easy- also just nice to play without scoring…as luck of the draw involved too means youngsters aren’t at too much of a disadvantage. Great intro into into more complex games- can’t wait to get expander sets! So seven year old happy to play…

I have a special love for Carcassonne. It was the first game that really got me into the hobby, and I still love it to this day. It is a simple game of laying tiles down to grow cities, roads, and fields, claiming them and scoring them. There is more thinking involved than you first imagine, especially when trying to muscle in on opponents’-controlled areas. The best part about this game is seeing the sprawling map unfold during the game whilst you build it out tile by tile. Great game. Always highly recommend this one. It is definitely improved by some of the expansions however. Absolute pillar in the board game hobby.

The royalty of all time placement board games, with a loving community and an endless amount of expansions. One of my favourite games of all time, and a must have for game nights.

Carcassonne is the game that is most often billed as making gamers. At the start of the game rather than a board, you have an empty table. During the game you take turns placing out tiles in order to build up the landscape with cities, rivers, fields and monasteries. This is one of the first games that showed me that not everything was like monopoly, cluedo and uno. This is a simple to pick up game, with some options to make the rule set a bit easier on the brain for younger or newer gamers. On your turn you draw a tile from the face down pile and place it adjacent to a tile already on the board. You must match the terrains, so roads must match with other roads, fields with fields and cities with cities. Afterwards you may place a meeple of your colour out onto one of the features on the tile, which will score you points. As roads, fields, monasteries and cities are completed, they will score you points if you have claimed them. There are a bazillion expansions for this game, but I think if you buy this version which contains the river and the abbot then that is a year or more of playing without ever getting stale. This is a staple that can be brought out at any time.

Carcassonne is the PERFECT introduction game to new players. It introduces meeples to the world, the concept of an ever-changeable board and is incredibly simple and logical to play. I would 100% recommend, I have spent so many hours playing base Carcassonne and then you throw in the expansions? Oh yes please!
