Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle- A Cooperative Deck Building Game Reviews

Read Zatu Games Reviews

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle Harry Potter has had a few forays into the board game world via Funkoverse and other games, but here we see the Potterverse become a cooperative deck building game with a campaign like structure and content revealed as players get further into the story. Deck building is the mechanic of players starting with a relatively week deck of 8-10 cards which they build up by acquiring new cards, usually from a shared central ‘market’. You are also able to trim your deck by getting rid of the weaker cards, thus increasing the chance that you will draw the cards you actually want. The game is pleasingly themed around the Harry Potter stories, specifically the films with most of the artwork taken from stills of the movies. A lot of content is contained in 7 game boxes. You open a new one in each consecutive game. This means that your game journey will mirror the films as each game boxes will contain relevant enemies and cards needed for the new story elements. All these cards can be reset into their boxes, if you wish to experience the story again. Players will take the role of one of the key Gryffindor heroes, Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville. This means your starting decks will be different for each player and will have different strengths and weaknesses. The story structure allows the game to gentle teach you more and more mechanics as you go, gently increasing the complexity and difficulty as you travel through the story. Rather fitting for a game that’s set in a school with increasingly difficult exams…Fans of Potter will be in their elements for sure, but fans of deck builders will also find a great experience here.Player count: 2-4Time: 30-60 minutesAge rating: 11+

I think you have to be a pretty big Harry Potter fan for this game to work for you. I enjoyed the adding new characters into the decks etc but the gameplay just felt very samey. I also thought the artwork, just using film stills, was lazy and detracted rather than added anything to the game. If it had original art it would have felt a much better experience for me but that won't matter to everyone.

Fairly new to board games as my partner has introduced me to the world of board games and all it’s glory. Really cool game! The items inside are high quality, the games 1-7 is a cool concept and I love the fact there’s a place at the back to keep all the individual rules for each game safe. The game instructions were very clear so easy to pick up which is great.

Great co-op game, lots of fun, nice progression of difficulty through the 7 possible games/difficulties. Can snowball a bit and quickly become too easy or impossible. Much depends on the cards which are available through the 'market'. This random and critical component is the reason for 4 and not 5. Still highly recommended, especially for HP fans.

Bought to play with my fiancée. She's a big Harry Potter fan but isn't too keen on complicated games. Really liked how progressing added different mechanics meaning by year 7 there was quite a few different things to do but introduced them in a way that didn't scare her away. It's a little bit of a pain to set up and pack away, much easier to leave on a table for the duration of the campaign. Would recommend upping the difficulty of not playing with children.

My mrs isn't much of a gamer but she dies love Harry Potter so I thought I'd give this a try...anyway we played to mission 7 on the first play....and its only for a lack of time that we havnt been back. Very simple to learn Introducing new things as you go we love it and even I'm really enjoying it a step up from ticket to ride without any real added complexity imo

My 8yr old daughter is harry potter mad. I got this game to play with her. She loves it and casts the spells enthusiastically. The game mechanics are simple which is great for an 8yr but a little thin for me which is why it's 4 stars
