You don’t have to be a fan of D&D to appreciate the puzzly genius of Roll Player. This dice placement game sets you the task of creating a character that could actually be used in a role-playing game. The game will see you drafting dice to complete rows of three dice that add up to a statistical value. The player board you choose will determine the race of your character and set some initial stat altering value - your strength column might be a +1 for example. Although each race has some minor differences like this, each row gives you a special power when you play a dice to it, placing a die in intelligence lets you re-roll one of your previously placed dice, where as the dexterity row let’s you swap two dice positions.

Added to this however, is a range of cards that give you a back story, class and more. These cards will set-up some parameters for you to try and complete for maximum scoring opportunities. They will give you a number or a number range to aim for in each row, as well as bonus points for placing certain colours of dice in the right positions on your grid. The player board is thick card with dice shaped portions cut out so all your dice stay in place nicely. The way these cards and player boards interact is not only clever and funny, but adds a huge amount of variety to the game. You might not agree with funny but I certainly laugh when fate deals me a Protector Dwarf Monk with a backstory as a brawler…

During a round you will draft a die to add to your board, potentially going to the shop to buy point giving cards or powerful upgrades. Although the luck of the dice is certainly present the powers you gain through placing dice and the cards give you a lot of options to mitigate that luck.

Added to all this is a dedicated solo mode that is just almost as enjoyable as the multiplayer game.

There is more to the gameplay than we have detailed here but it should give you an idea of what to expect in Roll Player - at the very least a random way to create your next RPG character, but give it a try and you will find an engaging and enjoyable puzzle of dice placement and point scoring goodness.

Such a fun game, solo play so far but played it daily since it arrived and looking forward to getting to to the table with the family.

Great quick and easy to understand dice manipulation game. Works well with any of the 1-4 player, my 8 year old enjoys it as much as 40(ish) year old self. A great choice as a light fun game.

This game is highly regarded...and I can see why! There's a nice amount of stategic depth and dice mitigation abilities to play around "bad rolls", and lots of theme to enjoy if you want to. Looking forward to purchasing the expansion at some point, as this is a game that will definitely stay in my collection!!

In my opinion its a great game, it reminds me games like Azul and Reef (also Sagrada but i havent played that one). Player interaction is minimal because everyone is thinking how to complete their own "puzzle" best they can and rarely have time to see how to screw oponents by taking cards or dice they need the most. Plays great solo and with 2 players. Havent tried higher player count but it should be good too.

A refreshingly different puzzle game without any destructive player interaction. Plenty of variability with random setup for every game. Great component quality too, with one of the most satisfying "punch-out" processes I've ever add.

Nice brain cruncher and you try to Min/Max your character. Played with 3 players and was quick once we got the hang of it, though I can see peeps with 'Analysis Paralysis' getting stressed :)

I’ve only played this as a 2- and 3-player game so far but I’ve really the experience of both. You create your Character by rolling dice, fulfilling criteria for backstory, stats, alignment and class. It’s near impossible to focus on all of these at once so you have to decide which one/s you want to concentrate on and go for that. In both plays so far my strategies have changed and... I’ve lost both times! It’s a lot of fun, deciding on the risk/reward of picking a high dice versus being able to purchase a card first. The turns are fast so not much down time and the rules are quite simple. I’d love to try the expansion next, to see how that builds into this idea...
