Great Western Trail Reviews

Read Zatu Games Reviews

America in the 19th century: You are a rancher and repeatedly herd your cattle from Texas to Kansas City, where you send them off by train. This earns you money and victory points. Needless to say, each time you arrive in Kansas City, you want to have your most valuable cattle in tow. However, the Great Western Trail not only requires that you keep your herd in good shape, but also that you wisely use the various buildings along the trail. Also, it might be a good idea to hire capable staff: cowboys to improve your herd, craftsmen to build your very own buildings, or engineers for the important railroad line.If you cleverly manage your herd and navigate the opportunities and pitfalls of Great Western Trail, you surely will gain the most victory points and win the game. Ages 12+, 2-4 players, 75-150 minutes playing time

A fantastic game, full of lots of mechanics. Quick long but, if you like longer board games, definitely worth it

I picked up this game following a review by Shut Up and Sit Down and do not regret it. At the time of this review I have played this game twice with 2 players and once with 4. In each case I've enjoyed it immensely. Initially appearing daunting to learn with a large amount of different options and choices you can take, each rule is simple and once familiar with the basic concept easy to remember, especially with reminders all over the board. A lot of thought has gone into the game design giving each player a large variety of avenues they can follow in order to win and with the capacity to randomise and change the initial starting locations and buildings you are capable of building each game, the lifespan of the game is increased. I look forward to playing more and would highly recommend for any board gamer who isn't looking for a simple game to play.

Finally an alternative euro game that rivals Agricola! There's minimal player interaction which is the one thing I would like to see improved. Still trying to work out the optimal strategies...who knew delivering cows could be so fun?!

Played with two and three players. It's best with three as strategy becomes much more refined and makes it much more difficult but still loads of fun. Iconography everywhere but be sure to stick with it it's worth it. This is now my second favourite game just behind the village.

This is a gamer's game and works well with 2, 3 or 4. There are many possible strategies to win although I am still exploring them! It is a heavy weight game and rewarding when things go well....
