America in the 19th century: You are a rancher and repeatedly herd your cattle from Texas to Kansas City, where you send them off by train. This earns you money and victory points. Needless to say, each time you arrive in Kansas City, you want to have your most valuable cattle in tow. However, the Great Western Trail not only requires that you keep your herd in good shape, but also that you wisely use the various buildings along the trail. Also, it might be a good idea to hire capable staff: cowboys to improve your herd, craftsmen to build your very own buildings, or engineers for the important railroad line.If you cleverly manage your herd and navigate the opportunities and pitfalls of Great Western Trail, you surely will gain the most victory points and win the game. Ages 12+, 2-4 players, 75-150 minutes playing time

“This is the best cowboy simulator you will ever play. Seriously. You drive your cattle across America to sell them at the market. It is a deck building, rondel, engine building, tile laying game which is very smooth and a lot of fun. The first couple of plays take a while but once you get used to it it is a lot of fun. Highly recommended.”

“Such a great game, move your cowboy up the trail and use the actions as you go. Lots of iconography to get used to in the beginning and lots of different options for you. It's worth the learning time though, there is a reason this is so well lived within the gaming community. Should be in most collections. A modern classic”

“Great Western Trail is one of my favourite games. Playing the game is a simple as moving your cowboy up the trail and taking various actions depending on where you stop. Of course this is complicated by the various options you have to improve you herd and sell them further down the railway. The trail makes the game feel almost like a changing rondel as you loop round it 6-7 times in a normal game. The theme may be a little dry but the satisfaction is high for this cow herding game.”
