Azul is the Spanish word for blue, and while there is some blue in this game the name remains somewhat obtuse, thankfully the gameplay more than makes up for it. Azul sets you up as mosaic tilers looking to tile a wall, or something, to be honest the theme is not the strongest and this is very much an abstract experience. But that doesn’t stop it being a beautiful one. The tile pieces in Azul are gorgeous, looking like fancy starburst sweets and feel great in your hands. During set-up you will lay on a number of round cardboard tiles representing the factories where you pick up the tiles you need. Onto each of these you place four random starburst tiles. On your turn you may take any number of those tiles, as long as they are the same colour. Those left are moved into a central pile. From that point on you may also take any number of the same colour tiles from the central pile and if you are the first to do so, you lose a point and get to be first player next time round. Once you have your tiles you place them on to one of five staging areas. Each of the five staging areas has a different amount of spaces (from 1-5) and each can only hold tiles of one colour at a time. At the end of the round if one of these staging areas is full then you can move one tile from that area to the corresponding row of the mosaic discarding the rest. This is the only way you can discard tiles without penalty - should you take more than you need/can place then they will give you negative points. You score points for placing tiles into your mosaic for each row and column of tiles you add to counting your tile in both directions. You’ll also get bonuses for rows, columns and filling all five spaces of one colour of tile. Azul is a fantastic drafting game that looks great on the table and appeals to almost everyone I have played it with. Both Azul and it’s sequel, Stained Glass of Sintra, offer easy to learn games that are not lacking in depth and planning. They would make great games for beginners and old hands alike and are the perfect gaming gift. Younger players may find Stained Glass slightly easier to understand but there isn’t a huge amount of difference and you can’t really go wrong with either! Azul is a beautiful looking game and its great to play if you fancy something quick and easy. Its quick to set up and the games arn't too long. It took me and my girlfriend a few games to get into it properly but we love it now, especially if we don't have anyone round to play with this is still really fun with just two people.

I enjoy Azul and it probably has reasonable mileage. I don't get super excited about it but it probably is one of the games I play the most at my boardgame meetup as it is popular in the fraternity and easy to pick up. Tried it out on my daughter's and they both loved it. Favourite of my youngest (9) of the 5 or so we played on the day. Really nice quality pieces. Another one I had been put off with the price of until I found Zatu.

A very pleasing abstract game. As the spiel des jahres winner this year, it certainly deserves to be any gamer’s collection. Great for families, easy to play, difficult to master, as soon as you finish the game and realise your score isn’t ‘that’ good you just want to play it again. Also looks and feels beautiful. AZUL is our first abstract strategy game and I think we get into this genre with the best. By playing it I can tell the brilliant reviews were absolutely right, it is definitely a game to have at home. I was just amazed by the quality of the box and the contents My first impression was: "If it is as good as it looks than it was a great investment for sure!" - I was right!! So far we only played the two-player variant so I have no impression on playing with 3 or 4 people but we will definitely find out soon :) Game setup is easy and straightforward, as you are done with that the 20 minutes or so tile placing fun can begin :) I wouldn't really go into the rules too deep, I would say the basics are not too difficult, then you just need to find out your strategy. There are two different variants one gives you more directions, this is what we played so far, but the other variant looks fun too but needs even more attention and more complex strategy I think. I'm sure we'll get into that soon :) The quality is great as I already mentioned above, you just want to touch those colourful tiles all the time, all game components are beautifully created, the only thing it would make it even better if me is if they would have used ceramic for the tiles. Summarize it all: DO NOT THINK TOO MUCH JUST BUY IT AND PLAY! Attention: These tiles are highly addictive!!!
