In Machi Koro Fifth Anniversary Edition, the popular gateway game by Pandasaurus Games gets some TLC! Gone is the cardboard money – instead, this comes with plastic molded custom coins. It also comes with new dice, larger cards and an all-improved rulebook, making for a quicker set-up. The core gameplay remains the same. You’re the mayor of Machi Koro, and you inherit a wheat field, and a single bakery. More of a village, than a city. But thanks to dice and some smart purchases, soon that village will grow into a thriving metropolis!Your aim is to be the first player to buy your four Landmark buildings. The citizens want a radio tower, and a theme park! You start with two cards and on your turn you roll one (or two) dice. If the sum of the pips matches the number on one (or more) of your cards, the action of that building triggers. Usually it involves earning money. At the end of your turn, you can spend your money to buy another building from a public flop of cards and add it to your city. Or, you could pay to buy one of your four Landmark cards…Regular building cards come in four different types. Blue cards pay out if their number gets rolled on anyone’s turn. There’s no down-time between turns in Machi Koro! Green cards pay out on your turn, only. Red cards are ‘business’ cards, which involve some players having to pay others to ‘visit’ that player’s card. Purple cards are further cards that mean you’ll have to pay other players! In no time at all you’ll have a growing tableau of building cards in front of you, numbered 1-12. You’ll earn income every turn! But beware those red and purple cards… Hoarding money can make you a target. Do you spend it quick on improving your money-making ‘engine’? Or do you save up for those all-important Landmarks? Remember, Machi Koro is a race, after all! Player Count: 2-4 PlayersTime: 30 minutesAge: 10+

A really nice upgrade to the original. The new enlarged cards are an improvement, although the colour does look a little more faded than the originals. Minus one star for the plastic coins, which are just not necessary. I would much rather cardboard, both for environmental reasons and the joy of punching out the tokens!

I played a friend's copy of this and immediately bought my own. Not a huge amount of depth, but the expansion adds some more if needed. I find the simplicity of this one pretty appealing as we can play it with anyone. Those looking for something "more", either Valeria: Card Kingdoms or maybe Space Base would be the better.

Super quick to setup and pack away. Simple and engaging rules and gameplay. My wife and mother both enjoyed it and they typically aren't so much into board games. Definitely recommend, particularly for groups of friends who are newer to board games or don't like complicated games.

A fun version of monopoly (that's how I describe it to non-gamers). I loved that each die roll doesn't necessarily mean good for everyone as we all have our own cards.
