Designer of Wildlands, Martin Wallace, is normally known for economic ‘Euro’ games like Brass, but every now and then he surprises us with games like AuZtralia and, well, Wildlands. Described as a skirmish game, that is a game where players are fighting each other usually with miniature figures across a map, Wildlands brings some of Wallace’s Euro experience to the genre. Typically a skirmish game, like Warhammer Underworlds, will use dice to resolve battles and therefore contains a high amount of luck. There are ways to mitigate this luck but it remains present. Fans of skirmish games enjoy the tension that comes from everything hanging on one fortunate roll. Wildlands somehow maintains that tension with no dice present. In the core box there are four factions of five figures each. Each faction also comes with it’s own deck which specialises in a certain action, ranged attack for example. This, added to the varying health of the different figures, adds a different feel to each of the factions. This means that if you have a figure with a lot of health for example, you can use them to protect weaker figures. You will use the cards to move around the map, attack other players and pick up crystals. There is a strict hand limit of seven cards, which sounds like a lot until you remember it takes three cards to pick up a crystal and you are only allowed to draw three cards at the end of a round. So do you make a bold play leaving yourself less options in the next couple of rounds, or do you save cards to use defensively? Somewhere inbetween? These kinds of decisions really make the game as you not only make your own plans but react to others actions. Wildlands works well at all player counts, and this will be improved on further with the planned expansion factions. The first of these, The Unquiet Dead, can be used as a faction or play as another feature of the board. The second faction are rumoured to do the same. In Wildlands you have a smart, easy to get in to skirmish game that does away with some of the luck and collectability of rival games, without sacrificing the fun. If you haven’t gelled with other skirmish games then this ‘Euro skirmish’ may be the game for you. Player count: 2-4 Time: 60 minutes Age rating: 14+

Absolutely fantastic light skirmish game. Two (asymmetric) teams of 5 duke it out to grab crystals and finish off one a other's combatants. Actions are card driven and an excellent interrupt mechanic enriches play. Loads of great add-ons from maps to factions to a team and solo variant. This is lean rather than light and achieves a lot with a tight and accessible rule set. Absolutely outstanding!

A very well crafted game with excellent minis and very well balanced gameplay. We played 3 and 4 player games and they all felt close towards the end with no player steamrolling the game. Managed to fit 3 games into about 2 hours, including the rules explanation. Highly recommend.

Wildlands is just so good, card based skirmish with teams of beautiful. Minis and simple rules. First to 5 wins either gather your jewels, kill the other characters or both. The use of the cards and cycling through your deck is just so much fun. Absolutely love this game.

I was not expecting this game to play the way it did.. I knew it had miniatures and was a strategy game, but the way the mechanics work with the secret miniature deployment and then the use of hand management to move your miniatures around the board, makes for a game that's clever and loads of fun! There's special unique powers for the different characters and teams, and the game boasts lots of replay-ability even without any expansions.

This immediately became our family's favourite game. The theme is fantastic (wizards, gladiators, dwarves etc), but most importantly my kids get options that they can relate to: avoid others and pick up crystals, or cast spells on people, fight in melee, or shoot arrows at a safe distance. Any of these actions can lead to victory. So if you have a little bruiser spoiling for a fight, or a risk-averse timid kid, there is a winning option for everyone. Genius. You each have a team (called a faction), but they are all different with different skills. This forces everyone to think of their own strategy and not just copy others, so you all play a slightly different game. The miniatures make the game very engaging. I have looked high and low to find a game for everyone in my family, and bingo, I've found it. (My kids are aged 10,11 &13) Buy it.

Wildlands is best described as a 'euro skirmish' game. That is a game where you will be using you miniatures to attack other players miniatures but in this case with no dice. Everything in this game is driven by your factions deck of cards, which allow you to interact with you minis in various ways. Each card will relate to some of your minis and allow different actions. When to use a card for which action is key to winning the game. To win you must be the first to reach 5 points, earned through killing other players minis, or collecting one of your own crystals which are spread out on the board at the start of the game. The starting factions contained here are not wildly different but are nicely balanced and play in different styles. The first two faction expansion change up the game though as they can be chosen by a player or act as an AI faction in the game. This is a fantastic game with a great system and great components.
