Mysterium, by Libellud, is a game of deduction where a group of players work as a team to decipher the true meanings of cryptic ‘visions’ sent from a ghost. It is highly thematic with gorgeous over produced in-game components allowing players to be inventive and interact with lots of table discussion. In Mysterium, players take on the roles of gifted mediums with the ability to communicate with the undead. One player becomes the ghost whose spirit is doomed to forever haunt the mansion after becoming the victim of a hideous crime. They attempt to reveal to the players the truth of what actually happened; who murdered them, how they did it and where it took place. Each medium is secretly gifted a selection of three potential combinations, noted behind the ghost players cardboard screen. The mediums are working towards their own goal independent of each other, however they are still considered as working as one team. All players win or lose as a group. The twist is that the ghost is unable to communicate in way other than give the other players a selection of highly stylistic dreamlike images on tarot cards. These are dealt to each individual player, once a round, to help them correctly identify their targets. Each card is a beautiful piece of surreal artwork, which can be read in many ways. It is up to the mediums to try to interpret the ghosts’ subtle nudges. The ghost can only present selected images from their hand of cards, which can limit what they want to say immeasurably, often to comic effect. Cards that show the potential suspects, weapon and location are placed on the table across three levels. Each round a medium will place one of their markers on a card confirming their choice. Once a player correctly guesses part of their combination they can progress to the next. Other players can also gain bonus points for agreeing or disagreeing with their fellow mediums over choices made. Mysterium continues over 7 rounds and if the mediums each manage to gather their personal combination and progress through the 3 separate levels then the final round takes place. All players’ options are revealed on the table and at this point there is one more round of visions dealt to the mediums, as they have to work out whose combination was actually the true story of what happened. If they correctly guess then the ghost can rest peacefully and everyone wins. Player count: 3-7 Time: 42+ minutes Age rating: 10+

An amazingly fun game, perfect for Halloween! We were really impressed by the quality of the components and the beautiful artwork — the designers really did take a huge amount of care to make a high-quality product. There’s even a spooky soundtrack to set the mood! Playing the game isn’t complicated once you understand how, but setting up for the first time is very confusing. I would recommend finding a Youtube tutorial rather than reading the instructions. Playing as the ghost is the most fun by far, although it’s often very difficult to find anything in your hand of cards that even remotely offers a clue to the players. You really do have to think hard and come up with the most tenuous connections sometimes! Listening to the players discuss theories you hadn’t even considered is very entertaining. Some fun could be had by not even having the ghost in the same room, communicating only by picture messaging to the players’ phones. One tiny niggle is I wish the player characters and suspects had some kind of characterization, or at the very least names, to add a little more depth to the story. Perhaps the player characters could be differentiated by giving each of them a different psychic power they can use once per game...e.g. the ability to ask the ghost a yes / no question, to make two guesses on the same turn, to ask the ghost to eliminate a card, to turn the timer over, etc. I also think the gameplay doesn’t make sense within the story. Why does the ghost give each player a different scenario for the murder? Apart from those minor points, an excellent game.

Mysterium is a fantastic game which has a brilliant coop vibe and being the ghost is always fun. Watching people work out the visions you have given them. Oooo the sweet delight when they get it correct! This game is easy to set up and has beautiful artwork! Everything from the little glass timer to the game screen all have a quality feel. If you enjoy cluedo and card games you will love this!

Gave it a go at the weekend and really enjoyed it, a good spin on the old Cluedo formula, especially if you have a gaming group that enjoys old fashioned haunted house mysteries! I would definitely recommend running through the game with two people before you play it properly. A big part of the game involves the "ghost" player not talking, so it makes it difficult if that is the person explaining the rules!

In my group, not liked by all - really hitting the spot with certain individuals but the board gamer more used to tactical & strategic games struggles. Hard work as the ghost.
