Dice Forge is a truly innovative game, customisable dice have been used in games before, but not with the richness of gameplay on offer here. Dice Forge is a beautifully illustrated, and well made game laced with engine building and a little luck. You start the game with two dice that are identical to everyone player’s dice. As the game goes on however you will have the opportunity to buy more dice face which you will use to replace existing ones in a ‘legoesque’ fashion. Cleverly the faces themselves are used to lever off the ones you are replacing. Every turn in the game you will choose to spend gold or shards. Gold is spent on new dice face which can give you more resources, or unique effects, and shards on cards which give one time bonuses, ongoing upgrades, or end game points. The super powerful cards obviously cost more shards and the big scoring one costs shards of both types - sun and moon. All this is tracked through your own player board which holds cubes in place really well, so rather than constantly fiddling with resource pieces you are just moving a tracker up and down. There is a variety of cards in the game meaning that the game contains some variety out of the box - you will not see, let alone use, all the powers and die faces in one game alone. The game plays quickly and well with all player counts, and despite not being a pure family game has gone down very well with children from the age of five up. This is because you can easily explain the possible outcomes of every move they might make. Although there is a little luck as a result of the dice, you get a generous amount of rolls (you roll and receive the resources on everyone’s turn, not just your own) and before long you have built dice that roll results you want pretty much all the time. Perhaps this is why it works so well - there is very little waiting around for other people to take their turns, you are either rolling your dice or watching what the other players are buying in case they grab something you wanted. Dice Forge comes with a great insert inside the box to hold the various pieces in place and is an easy recommendation for families and game night. Player Count: 2-4 Time: 40 Minutes Age: 10+

Really fun gimmick of being able to change the sides of your dice. They easily pop on and off and it feels really satisfying to upgrade your pool of dice as the game goes on. A solid game of resource management with great options for mitigating bad dice rolls.

This game was written by someone who understands a simple truth. Gamers love dice! This is a resource gathering fantasy game with a greek legend feel. Each turn players get to roll fun chunky dice for gold, magic shards, or victory points. Players roll their dice in each players turn, watching their supplies slowly build up. During their turn they can spend the magic shards on quests for more victory points, or (getting to the really fun part) spend gold on forging. Forging is where the game is at. Players can customise their dice, literally popping off a side, and replacing it with a newly purchased dice face. This element of customisation to follow your game strategy really makes the game unique. Plus that the dice themselves are charming and really fun to play with. This is a beautifully presented game, that while-heavily luck based (dice again) is great fun to play. And the uniqueness of forging your own dice will make sure this game finds a place in any gamers heart.

Dice Forge by Regis Bonnessee for Libellud, is an innovative dice crafting game where the premise is to build your own custom dice using tiles that are available to buy thus enhancing the possibility of acquiring resources. These resources can then be spent to buy cards that will give more resources, points or other special rewards. This enables many different strategies that a player could choose to adopt, which adds to Dice Forge's replay factor. Each player takes on the role of a hero trying to win the favour of the gods and become a demigod. The heroes can travel to various celestial islands if they have the required resources and purchase cards to aid their quest. The game has a mythical theme throughout, which is well executed, but is not important or relevant to the gameplay as its the different decisions a player takes that make this a truly great game. The most important components in the game are the dice and customisable faces that you can choose to buy. Each face gives a different resource: golden nuggets, fiery sun shards, crescent moon stones or victory points, enabling a player to choose a strategy that may affect the game. Gold is used to buy the dice faces, sun shards and moon stones are used to buy reward cards and victory points just give you points. The quest is ultimately about scoring the most points at the end of the game after all. The box is an integral part of the game, serving as a holder for the dice tile insert and to store all the various components very neatly when it's time to pack it away. This looks great when it's placed beside the game board and really adds to the theme and overall design aesthetic. The artwork is well drawn, colourful and easy to see what it's supposed to be representing. Card and component quality is of a very high standard throughout, especially the dice which are easy to build and take apart. The tiles can sometimes fly across the room, but usually they can be swapped with great ease in a matter of seconds. Each player has a hero card that is used to track progress, resources and most importantly points. The cards looks amazing and it's fun moving the resources around and spending gold. I would have liked the different heroes to have powers or skills that affected dice roles or actions within the game, but sadly this was left out. Maybe a future expansion will consider that… This is one of my favourite games to play, it has a unique strategy and replay factor that can make each game different to the last. It's nice using the quality components and customising the dice and the fact that the box is part of the game is a really nice addition. I really like managing the faces and powering up my dice, but ultimately this is a game of chance and sometimes the dice rolls go against you. I would definitely recommend Dice Forge and will be buying the Rebellion expansion soon

Excellent board game! The best board game insert I've ever seen. Very well thought design behind every single piece of components. Quick and easy to learn. Both for amateurs and board game nerds.
