Kingdomino has got a smattering of Dominoes to it, but instead of numbers, you’re building a multi-terrain kingdom around your castle. It’s like the Ronseal of board game titles – “does exactly what it says on the tin”. Kingdom-ino? Well played, Bruno Cathala; well played, sir. This won the coveted Spiel des Jahres award in 2017 (the best Family Game of the Year), and it is easy to see why… Kingdomino is a charming, colourful tile-laying board game for two to four players. You’re competing monarchs, acquiring rectangular 2x1 land tiles that have two different terrains on them – including lakes, mines, pastures and more. There are 48 tiles in total, and in theory, the more valuable tiles are the higher-numbered ones. Some tiles will have crowns on them – these are worth precious points. The game ends after 12 rounds (24 rounds in the two-player variant). Players then multiply the size of each continuous terrain by the number of crowns within it. Highest score wins! Gameplay is as wonderful as it is simple. As many tiles are randomly selected from the supply as there are players, and are then placed numerically. In turn order, players select which Kingdomino tile they want by placing their monarch on it. Then more tiles are revealed, but turn order has changed; now the first player is the person that claimed the lowest number tile in the previous round. They do two things: claim another tile from those just revealed, and then place the tile they claimed earlier into their own, expanding kingdom. When putting a tile into a kingdom, at least one of the two terrain types must touch a matching terrain (Dominoes-style). You might wish to, say, expand your woodland, or concentrate on a giant lake, instead. However, players must think strategically and plan ahead: the borders of your kingdom only stretch so far. You’re limited to building five squares high by five squares wide. (In the two-player variant, you can build a 7x7 grid, which becomes quite the pleasant puzzle). The rules are quick to teach and elegant to present – you’ll be up and running within two to three minutes of taking it out of the box. Games are short and snappy – they fit into that wonderful ‘Let’s play that again!’ category. The tiles are thick, chunky and therefore durable, which is handy, because believe us, you’re going to play Kingdomino again and again! Player Count: 2-4 Time: 15 Minutes Age: 8+

A lovely family game accessible to any age. I love how simple the gameplay is, placing tiles to create sections of the same environment, but the puzzle of how to score those sections is always interesting. The best thing is, the game is really short so can play over and over again.

A charmingly simple tile placement game at first glance, but one that has layers of tactical planning underneath. As easy to setup and play as it is to pack away. Definitely one to have on the coffee table for a quick game here and there.

I choose the games I'm going to buy carefully, reviewing the available information and usually with a specific reason.... as unfortunately I can't buy them all! This game was chosen because it was small enough to play on a caravan table but looked as if it would provide a lot of entertainment in a short game play, ideal for a holiday evening. It's a game for when you don't want any complex decision making and which you can pick up and put down easily We've enjoyed it so much my daughter has just bought one for her household of 2. It's enjoyable playing with 4, but I think it plays better with 2 people as you get to build a more interesting 7 x 7 layout, which makes a surprising amount of difference. For the price this diverting little game was excellent value off Zatu.

Quickly became one of our favourites to get to the table. Rules are very simple and straightforward to pick up but there is a surprising amount of strategy in terms of tile selection and placement as you get more experienced. Only takes about 30 mins to play so easy to squeeze in a game here and there. The tiles themselves are very tactile and bright in colour which makes the whole game seem more fun and engaging.
