Sub Terra Reviews

Read Zatu Games Reviews

A 1-6 player cooperative game of terrifying cave escape. Players take the role of amateur cavers attempting to escape an unexplored network of subterranean tunnels, before the lights flicker out or the darker things beneath the Earth catch up to them... In Sub Terra players spend their turn exploring and revealing the tunnel system around them, attempting to survive the various perils of the cave, from floods and cave ins to gas leaks and scree. Players each have a role which gives them specialist abilities, such as an Engineer with dynamite to blast a new route or a Scout to find a route more easily. New tiles are placed from a randomised stack of cave features, which determines whether you'll be hit with a dead end or a range of new options. At the end of each turn, players face the reality of their situation, with a hazard card drawn to determine what danger causes them damage or cuts off their way out of the horror below. These cards are finite, and when they run out, your torches flicker and the air feels tight, and your chance of survival diminishes quickly.

So, we've tried to play it twice, but the first time we failed horribly because we misunderstood the rules. There's quite a lot of rules to wrap your head around, but once you get them, it's relatively straightforward. We've played it with just 2 people and I can see how each time you play would pan out differently, keeping the game exciting even after playng multiple rounds. Sub Terra is a challenging, game, but it's also very exciting. The tiles are pretty, and even though the blacklight tiles are a bit of a gimmick (I assume most people, like myself, don't have a blacklight) it's a nice touch that shows how much thought was put into the design.

Such a thematic and atmospheric co-op. Delving deeper into dangerous mines avoiding rockslides, floods and monsters. There is such a strong horror theme where flipping tiles and cards is truly scary. The player powers are strong and really change the way you play which is all you want from a good cooperative experience.

A brilliant cooperative game that manages to be incredibly thematic. The tension is great and the player powers are all great to play. Beware though, this game is hard!

Think Carcassonne but with a horror theme. You and your fellow players are trying to desperately escape from the caves all in tact. This is an exciting co-op
