Cities in Ruin: Eldritch Horror Exp Reviews

As a subterranean behemoth begins to stir, Eldritch Horror: Cities in Ruin brings terror across the globe, with cities crumbling to dust. The slumbering beast, Shudde M’ell, can not awake from his eternal rest, lest the world be brought to ruin. For those aware of the impending threat, it is vital for action to be taken to prevent global devastation.

With a new ancient one to contend with in this expansion, investigators must tackle worldwide catastrophes that are condemning critical cities to rubble. As tactical locations are removed from the equation, will you bring aid to those in need or pursue the greater, looming threat?

This new devastation system can now occur alongside any of the preexisting Ancient Ones, so expect the challenge to grow more intense when you engage in these daunting conquests. Fantasy Flight Games have also given us ‘Prelude Cards’, which can be used to shake up your playthroughs, by altering the game state before dice even start rolling.

Of course, as with the other small box expansions, Cities in Ruin comes packed with a plethora of new cards to add variety to your existing decks, including 24 new ‘Mythos Cards’, 16 ‘Asset Cards’, 20 ‘Condition Cards’ and many more. Freshly introduced are ‘Unique Assets’, which are powerful cards granted as a result of specific encounters and sorely needed against the abundance of new threats.

With plenty of new elements to get to grips with, Eldritch Horror: Cities in Ruin will greatly extend the replay-ability of the already excellent core game. Fair warning though, get ready for things to kick up a notch, because this expansion doesn't pull its punches. This makes it ideal for players that have already become confident facing off against these timeless horrors.

If you haven't already got your hands on it, we recommend checking the Forsaken Lore Expansion, which will give you a bit more of event you've come to love and fear in Eldritch Horror. For those needing a little more, there are big box expansions, which include even more content, along with side boards to extend your playing area and allow you to explore strange new landscapes.

So far after only asingle play, the new mechanic -disaster- has already provided a epic twist to the stories narrative. The new characters add variety, and one can never have too many encouters or items. My only gripe is that "Tasks" - which also feature - are scantilly dealt with, I feel I am missing some details from a prior expansion, howver not that big a problem as rules are available on line. Overall, a good addition for the price.

Expansion added great flavour to the original game. New lore regarding Ancient one and investigators adds depth and the devastations bring additional incentive to keep the Doom counter going backwards even if it means making Dark pacts.

My second Eldritch Horror expansion (thank you Zatu for really great prices and stock) and this one really is clever. the additions to the system don't just widen the world, they give you more to do and more ways to do it using the same rules learned in the basic game. as a gamer of 30 yrs i'm just so taken with how good the system is and how it is expanded on.

Good: New mechanic feels interesting and fresh with the games, catastrophic status effects can sway someone who has the game-mechanics too well down. Fun "exploring" ruined cities and interesting ancient one consistent with theme. Bad: With too many expansions there can be some bloating (having to shuffle through way too many status effects to get to the one you need or during start of game item setup). A good workaround is to have only one or two expansions "active" with the original game at once (unlike me who has a mountain of cards now).

This is one of the must have, small box expansions for Eldritch Horror. The disasters introduce a whole new level of complexity and tension. I like how the new decks are used (not only by the ancient one; Shudde M’ell) but through prelude cards, mythos cards and conditions. This means you could be investigating any Ancient One when a disaster turns up (which is a real possibility where these outer gods are concerned), good re-use and integration of cards and more variety for maximum replayability!!! The other small box expansion that must be brought immeadiatley is Forsaken Lore as it adds more variety to the existing ancient ones and a ton of new cards.
