Gloomhaven: Jaws of the LionGloomhaven is a phenomenon in the truest meaning of the word. A huge kickstarter, followed by 5 printing runs and counting. Quickly topping the chart for number 1 ranked board game on Board Game Geek and then it’s sequel Friosthaven eclipsing the originals Kickstarter performance.Gloomhaven has cemented itself in board gaming culture as one of the best games. If it has one problem, one tiny thing that stops it being an essential purchase, it is the sheer size of the game. From box size to the scope of the gameplay Gloomhaven is a beast. The intimidation factor might put some off. Enter Jaws of the Lion.Jaws of the Lion aims to be the accessible quick playing introduction to the Gloomhaven world. Set as a standalone prequel the game offers a new glimpse into the world, with new characters and monster types for veterans of the series. To cater for new players map tiles have been banished in favour of a scenario book. The book contains the map itself, and you will play directly on it. This also allows rule reminders to be printed next to the area you are playing. This idea has proven so popular that fans are asking for a similar book to be released for the original Gloomhaven too! Learning the game now takes place over a five scenario tutorial and with simplified rule sets. If you haven’t yet tested the waters of Gloomhaven this is a great place to start. It’s a smaller package but perhaps a more elegant one, and if you find yourself enjoying your time with Jaws of the Lion, you have the massive Gloomhaven available, and by the time you have finished that Frosthaven should be hitting retail…Player count: 1-4Time: 30-120 minutesAge rating: 14+

Jaws of the Lion is the perfect way to get into the Gloomhaven system. The way everything is displayed and structured in the books and box, this is a much more gentle step into Gloomhaven. Perfect for new players and veterans alike.

Gloomhaven seemed a bit daunting to us so we wanted to try Jaws of the Lion first. And I'm so glad we did! Brilliant game with awesome mechanics and a fun campaign, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in Gloomhaven. Jaws of the Lion is epic enough on its own too!

I play games with my kids and I think Gloomhaven would be a bit too much for them. This is a lot more accessible and still lots of fun. Very quick to set up too, with all the maps/boards being in a book. Really like the elegant, puzzle like, combat system.
