Paris - La Cite de la Lumiere (City of Light) Reviews

Paris is a two-player board game by Jose Antonio Abascal infused with Parisian aesthetics by the boardgame’s artist Oriol Hernández. The game is set in late 19th century Paris during the 1889 “Exposition Universelle,” or world’s fair, when public electricity was a hot topic. Electricity spread throughout the city, creating today’s beautiful nocturnal Parisian streets and coining Paris’s nickname “La Cite de la Lumiere”, the city of lights.

The most well-lit buildings are admired more highly by passers-by. In the first phase, players can either place tiles or grow their reserve of buildings. The cobblestone tiles are divided into 4 random spaces (their color, their opponents’ color, a streetlight or a mixed-color space where either player can build).

Then, in the second phase, players build on top of their color or the mixed spaces, in effort to position their buildings as close to as many streetlights as possible. More streetlights solicit more adoration and points. The player with the best lit buildings steals the hearts of Parisian pedestrians and wins the game.

This is a spacial puzzle that is played in the box, there is the drafting phase and then also the spatial puzzle of placing the tiles to try and box out your opponent. This is easy to understand but hard to master. Also it's played inside the box!

Very simple but deceptively tricky. The presentation is gorgeous and is worth it for that reason alone almost. Scoring can be a little awkward when it comes to multiplying etc. Two phases to the game mean that it's kept fresh for the whole runtime (which is pretty short, and that's a compliment). Time will be spent trying to set up for phase 2, then bemoaning your shortsightedness in phase 1. Good little game!

I was attracted to this game by the stunning artwork. It's a lovely, compact game which is quick to learn but has plenty of playability. It's one of my go to 2 player games.

A fun, simple tile-laying game for two. It's been a joy to play this with my family, and the production values are top notch.

A great, quick game that is easy to learn but appears to have enough complexity to keep bringing it to the table. On first playing all moves felt a bit experimental, but with more plays I believe the game will become more tactical. Very happy with this purchase.

Great game for two players! A little bit similar to the board game Patchwork but a bit more complicated I very recommend for romantic evenings
