Forbidden Island drops you and up to three other players onto a seemingly paradise isle in the search for treasures that supposedly can controls the elements. But beware! The island does not want such relics to fall into your hands – it’s constantly sinking in attempt to thwart you. In this co-operative game, you and your team must work together to grab all four treasures before sprinting to Fool’s Landing, where you’ll fly off into the sunset. The Forbidden Island itself is made up of 24 square location cards, which you’ll shuffle and arrange into a diamond, of sorts (meaning you’re getting a modular board set-up every time, which is great for replay-ability). There’s a Flood Deck of cards and a set number are revealed each turn, determining which part of the island has now become (partially or totally) flooded. There are also Treasure Cards belonging to each of the four sacred objects, and players have to acquire four of a kind (in a kind of hand-management, set-collection fashion) in order to claim the matching treasure. Players will each get a pawn that starts on the island, and on their turn it becomes an action point allowance system, where they can take up to three actions of the following options: move to an adjacent tile, flip partially flooded tiles back to their ‘land’ side, give a Treasure Card to a fellow player, or capture a treasure at a specific location, itself. At the end of their turn, the active player will gain two Treasure Cards and then wince as they reveal cards from the Flood Deck to see what’s flooded… If a Waters Rise! card is revealed from the Flood Deck, a corresponding Water Level marker rises (which means more cards per turn will have to be revealed), and the current discard pile of Flood Cards is shuffled and then placed on top of the remaining Flood Deck. This is all sounding a bit Pandemic, isn’t it? And you’d be right to think so – Forbidden Island is also designed by Matt Leacock, and he’s mirrored many of the fantastic mechanics from his other hugely popular co-operative game and translated them into a simpler format. The characters have asymmetrical player powers – just like in Pandemic – and there are various ways in which you can lose the game: if one team member is on a totally flooded tile and cannot swim to safety, if the Treasure tiles sink before you’ve claimed them, if Fool’s Landing totally sinks, or if the Water Level reaches the top. Forbidden Island is a brilliant co-operative experience if you and your gaming pals are looking for a team challenge that’s on the ‘gateway’ side of things. There are various levels of difficulty on offer in the set-up, as well as similar titles Forbidden Desert and Forbidden Sky, before you can move onto the likes of Pandemic in its many guises, or the campaign option that is Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 (all by Matt Leacock). Mostly playing solo using 3 characters. There are so many alternate layouts for the island this will keep me playing for years.

A fun board game with replay-ability. Only played two, but can see how it will be more challenging with extra players

As a fan of Pandemic who’s found it hard to get some slightly less experienced board gamers into it, I’ve been looking for something like this! Lovely pieces and great game to play/introduce people to slightly more difficult coop games

A game that really beat my expectations! I got this for something quicker and simpler to play with my partner, and for the lovely artwork, but it has become a surprise favourite. The set up is just small enough that it's comfortable to play on a coffee table at the sofa, and while it is very simple, every game turns out different and is easy to play over and over. The artwork and treasure pieces are really lovely even if the pawns are very simple (although still good quality) but the coop asepect is what made us really love it as a couple. It makes light hearted discussion and planning an absolute must with other players, and the colourful a detailed illustrations adds to the weight of losing a tile and really creates a sense of adventure, and the lovely little treasure pieces make obtaining them feel like a victory. While the stakes are quite high, regardless of what difficulty you're playing at, this never feels like a punishing game, and winning or losing together feels great fun and like a real team effort. I have not tried this with more than two players yet but the beautiful and quite compact light tin I think would make it very easy to take with you to visit friends or family. For a really great price this gets so much use! Absolutelty effortless to learn how to play, quick to set up and tidy away, and great fun with a great sense of cooperation and achievement!

Great game was a lot of fun but is very aggravating when u are about to win (on fools landing the last tile to win) with 2 more water levels to go till death and then you pull 2 water rising cards and fail the objective. Overall a still a fantastic game :)

Another great coop game and a must have in your repertoire for both a quick and simple 2-player or an interesting group game. If you've played it's sequel desert or similar coop games like pandemic you'll love this and get the groove quickly. The roles are simple and varied, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. However, I must say I underestimated how brutal the pace can be in this one. I've never lost in all the pandemic games I've played but this one killed us first time. There are so very many ways to lose and a lot of fire-fighting (well drowning) to be done. Really nice artwork on each tile and your board is always different so replayability is high. The flow of play is quick and you easily find yourself wanting to play a second round as soon as you've finished

Such a great game. Cooperative so you all play against the game and win or lose as a team. This is great for those families who have someone who doesn't lose well! Work together to collect 4 sacred items from the island as the deck of cards gradually cause the island to sink around you making moving difficult. Each character has special abilities so you have to work together, playing yo each characters individual strengths. Lots of replay ability and if you get too Hood, there are ways to ramp up the difficulty. A great introduction to cooperative games and an absolutely brilliant game.
