Forbidden Desert is a game of survival from Gamewright and game designer Matt Leacock. Forbidden Desert is a co-operative game where you and your fellow players are searching the desert to recover a legendary flying machine that is supposedly powered by the sun itself. Moments before you arrive a sandstorm strikes your helicopter forcing a crash landing. You are now stranded, and your only hope is to find the flying machine and escape.

In Forbidden Desert each player takes on the role of an adventurer each with their own special abilities, and each round each player will complete four actions then draw the sand cards to make the sand storm to move and bury the desert that you are trying to excavate.

The actions that a player can take include, moving, removing sand tokens dropped by the storm when it moves, taking a machine part or excavate, meaning you can turn one of the desert tiles over to reveal items or the direction to the locations of the parts as eight of the tiles will point you in the direction of the four flying machine parts making each game different and unique.

There is only one way to win the game, assemble the parts on the excavated landing platform. But there are three ways to lose; dying from thirst, if a player ever reaching the death symbol on their water canteen then the game is lost. Players will have to drink water each time a sun beats down storm card is drawn, being buried - when the storm moves it leaves sand behind and if you cannot place a sand token because you have run out you have all been buried alive. Finally, the game can be lost if you are all swept away, that is when the storm level reaches maximum.

Can you survive the forbidden desert and fly away with the fabled flying machine powered by the sun or will you succumb to the storm, the sand or just thirst?

I prefer this to Forbidden Island simply due to its added complexity. It feels different enough from the original to be exciting and also is harder which is what you want from a great cooperative game. Great production too!

The continuation of the Forbidden series storyline, the game plays similarly to it's predecessor Forbidden Island, but with some added mechanics such as a shifting sand storm, parts of the lost city gradually being buried in sand and diminishing water supplies for the player's character. Also finding the flying machine parts requires finding the 2 tiles which give players the coordinates to the part, rather than just finding them like in Forbidden Island. More challenging than the previous game too.

Family inc.6 year old loved it! Probably not for all at that age but can definitely be played by under 10s. Epic wins and devastating losses for all ages!

this takes what I love about Forbidden Island and adds more depth and complexity. Having played a lot of Forbidden Island as an introductory co-op board game, Desert really feels like the next step. Really fun!

Really fun board game made with high quality materials! None of the cheap plastic that can so often be found in similar products. Great that it's collaborative, altho it's quite brutal in that you can think you're in the clear and you're suddenly dead...but that's a fun challenge!

Very accessible, repayable and subtlety beautiful to play game. After realising in a pandemic there are only so many competitive 2 player games you can play before you turn on one another; having a great coop game in your belt like this one is a must. Simple yet unpredictable, the shifting sands aspect of this game can take you from a very straightforward and easy game to really feeling the elements are truly against you. There's something beautiful and so frustrating about the mechanics, your best laid plans laid to waste as the storm rips them apart or the desperate search for water leaves you stranded. The strengths and weaknesses of each role are really exposed in a 2 player game and change the flow massively. The ship figurine you must build is the real star of the show and a welcome collectible

Played this 3 times in the last two days. Such a great game! We've won twice, but the fact that you can lose 3 ways keeps it interesting! Love the artwork, the replayability and the fact the board keeps changing. We're only 2, but it plays perfectly, can't wait to play with more people!

Love this game was one of my first games and I'd best described as a gateway game. Great introduction into cooperative play and a must have in a collection.
