I decided to volunteer because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and help those in need, whilst being part of a new and different culture. Ghana has proved to be the right place for my first volunteering experience, apart from being one of the safest countries in Africa the people are extremely welcoming and always willing to know more about you. After spending 3 weeks in Tamale I can say with confidence that this experience has exceeded all my expectations. Fredericks family (our host family) has made me feel at home and have taken very good care of me. In the evenings we played with his kids and then had dinner with the family while Rose (Fred’s wife) taught us countless stories about the Ghanaian culture. Also, some nights we would go to a bar with Fred and have some deep and meaningful conversations that I will always remember. The volunteering program itself was very well structured, I took part in the football coaching program so I was in charge of coaching the U13,U10 and U19 teams. In the mornings I taught at the girls school, it was impressive to see the girls working so hard both at home and in school. The days were long and sometimes I had a lot of work but it did not feel like it since the kids will fill you with joy everyday. During the weekends together with our guide Frederick we traveled to a monkey sanctuary, swam in waterfalls, visited a traditional African village and went on a Jeep Safari at Mole National park. I am sad to leave but glad to have made some very good friends starting with Fred and his family, the other volunteers, the football players and the girls in school. Hopefully, I will be able to come back again.

I’ve been a month at Tamale, Ghana, and I can certainly attest this was a life changing experience. For those who might feel it is an unsafe country, it’s not. Numbers actually tell Ghana in the safest country in west-Africa and I could see that with my own eyes. As a really religious but also welcoming different beliefs people, Ghanaians are always sweet and they make everything in their power to make you feel at home. Starting from the amazing family that coordinates the football’s project by Fredrick Addai. A humble and wise man that will always be by your side and recommend you the best places to visit. The weather is certainly HOT, but there’s an AC in volunteer bedroom that will make life easier. From the program itself, you’ll find adorable and respectful kids that are ready to learn at anytime. If you do enjoy football be certain that you’ll be welcomed with infinite chats about the beautiful game. It opens the door for even meaningful conversations about life goals and how life is outside Africa. So, if you do like football, kids and helping the others, Ghana is for sure the right place for you to live a real Africa experience. You can see some of my own experience and connect with me anytime by following me on Instagram: @football.changes.br. Hope to see you soon!

It was definitely a different experience for me because it was my first time in Africa and in a volunteering work type trip. At first I thought that I was going to have a hard time getting used to the culture and the lifestyle but in the end it was pretty easy and fun. I met wonderful people I learnt many lessons and overall I had a great time. Frederick Addai my coordinator made my adaptation in Ghana easier by carrying me to meet people and to get to know the town: Tamale. He always treated me with respect and affection. My experience at the project was outstanding off the charts: I had a really good time teaching the girls and establishing a long-lasting friendship with the teacher of my class: Adam who helped me a lot and showed me his sympathy from the start. A really reccommendable and positive experience for sure. My program highlight was definitely getting to know the students and the teachers at the school because I had a really good time spending time with them talking and playing several games.

I have just returned from my trip to Tamale Ghana. I stayed there for 10 weeks taking part as a nurse in the medical healthcare program and also collaborating in the school. It has been an amazing experience Ghanaian people are very nice and friendly they love to be with foreigners and to show their culture. Both people from the hospital and the school were very kind and grateful and it was very easy to establish relationships with them. In fact I still keep in touch with most of them. I am very grateful about the treatment of the host family they were very nice and they took care of me at every moment. It has been the best experience and adventure I have ever had and I have learned a lot. I highly recommend everyone to volunteer some time in their life. I have been able to prove that you are happier when you forget yourself and help and think about others.

My experience was very nice not only by helping the girls and in the orphanage (where they need a lot of help) but also to getting to now all the culture and this amazing friendly and happy people in Ghana. I thought it was only helping the girls in the school but I really felt useful in the school and in the orphanage and also I was able to help them giving them some matirials an cloth they really need. Country Partner Organization/ Local Contact during your trip was very Friendly and Supportive. The house was clean and spacious and in a good neighborhood. The food was alright. I will definitely recommend it to others.

My experience in Tamale Ghana was extraordinary. I would have never expected such a great time. People were very nice and welcoming and always helped me when there was something I needed. I also liked my work at the football program very much. I shared the passion of this sport with all of my players so we easily made a connection and it was always fun to coach them. All in all I am very happy that I was part of this family for three month and I am looking forward to come back one day. Frederick Addai is a very supportive and interested coordinator. Even if he has much work to do he always cares for his volunteers. He also tries to bring the Ghanaian Culture to the volunteers which was very appreciated. He is always laughing joking and makes it very easy to feel comfortable. His family is also a huge help for the volunteers especially his wife Rose who cooks every night same as Francis who shows you around and Stanley who is an interesting discussion partner. The work on my project was much fun. The people in Tamale appreciated my work very much from the coordinator and his family to the other coaches and the players. I was given much free space for my training structure so that decisions were mainly with me. The other coaches were willing to learn how football is tought in Germany. This open-minded behaviour wasn't expected by me but it created a very positive working atmosphere. I felt very happy to be part of the project and I always felt to be able to give some impact on the boys development. Everyone was nice and welcoming. The smile and curiosity of everyone made my stay an extraordinary experience.
