“I used to have whole sunflower hearts in my feeders, but I noticed that they're too big for small birds to eat whole, and they would often hold them in their beaks and bite down, with half of the seed falling to the ground - the chips are small enough to be eaten whole and avoid this problem (and the resultant mess). They also seem to be less prone to going 'soggy' in wet weather (not a current problem!)”
