“In no way squirrel proof. Within a few hours the squirrels had removed the lid, chewed the top of the plastic cylinder and even managed to get the feeder off the stand. It's now completely destroyed and unuseable”

As you say the feeder is new to the birds.
Once they get use to to the feeder it will no longer be a problem.
It can take a little while for birds to accept a new feeder.
