“When the item arrived l was disappointed to find a hole had been drilled into the glass shade, which was not very neatly done. Some of the opaque covering around the hole was chipped. I immediately telephoned your helpline to query my findings and I was told by George I believe, that he would call me back. I also mentioned a scratch on the shade, about an inch long , quite close to the drilled hole. George was very helpful and said he would forward me a copy of the returns policy. He said he had spoken with the manufacturer and was assured the hole should be there. I assumed bathroom lights should be in a sealed unit so don’t understand why a hole should be drilled into the shade!”

Hello Eve, and thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Please allow me to explain why an IP44 bathroom light would need this design. The hole is there as a drain hole to allow any water that may enter the back plate to drain back out. When a fitting is tested for IP44 it is sprayed with water through a 360 degree cycle and any water that accesses the fitting must be able to drain back out prior to it causing an electrical safety issue. The hole is there to ensure that this happens and water will not accumulate and potentially cause a problem. It isn’t obvious from our image but it does need to be there, but it should be a neat hole though. If you are not satisfied with this shade, be it the scratch or the drain hole being roughly cut, please do get in contact with one of our customer care team on 0151 650 2138 who will gladly arrange to replace it for a new shade.
