I bought this for my 8 year old son. It’s perfect. Having had a lot of experience with Pi’s over the years, I expected a system that was rough around the edges, but was amazed how well set up “out of the box” it was. It found our network printer straight away, and though it’s cabled for network access, the WiFi found all of our hotspots. The only coding I needed to do was to a a line into a configuration file so it could automatically log onto the family NAS at boot up. Though it is the UK version, you do need to tweak the configuration to select UK keyboard layout and spell checking. He has used it every day for home schooling since the new lockdown. Every video plays and Seesaw, his school learning platform, runs effortlessly in the web browser. Surprisingly fast too. Best thing since the BBC MODEL B I had as a kid. Excellent value for money, but don’t expect Mac or Windows slickness. With a little effort though you can get 98% of the way there for home schooling or office work, and it’s a lot slicker than a cheap tablet.

This really is an excellent kit. It does have everything that you need. The included accessories feel like quality items and are guaranteed to be compatible. The colours match and the setup looks really professional. At this price its just not worth buying unofficial alternatives. The book is aimed at younger users, but even though I'm a 50-year old bloke and a bit of a computer nerd, I still found it to be very helpful and not at all patronising. The book is also fully up to date for this new 400 version of the Pi. The Pi itself is great - the built-in keyboard reminds me of my early days of computing with a friend's ZX Spectrum. The included NOOBS card fired straight up but I did have some problems getting my Pi to access the internet through my WiFi. It connected and I could ping it from the router but it refused to communicate. Out of curiosity I used the Imager app to write Raspberry OS onto another SD card and that version works perfectly. Very odd. I can only assume I did something wrong when I set my Pi up the first time. This version of the Pi is perfect for learning about new operating systems. It's quite a novelty to burn an OS onto an SD card in a couple of minutes, swap the cards over and immediately have a completely new OS to try. The imager app is available for Raspberry OS, so you can use the Pi itself to write the SD card. No need for a PC at all.
