“I am surprised at very quick kernel build, but it needs USB Type-C for power source and Micro HDMI adapter to connect normal HDMI display.”

“As an owner of several previous versions of the raspberry Pi I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the newest instalment. I decided to go for the 4gb version and I’m very impressed with the performance upto now. Everything seems to happen much faster and it can definitely handle more jobs at once. I would have gave it 5* but there is a serious issue with running temperatures. Even doing a basic task like browsing the net or flicking through menus can make the device run seriously hot. Even making it lag and stutter. They do say it will be improved in firmware update in the near future but until then I’m managing to get by with a custom case I built with a fan keeping things cool.”

“Have had a time to play with the PI4 now, and It's pretty good. The extra Ethernet speed is going to make a big difference . I was not pleased to see USBc power, but I was pleased to see high speed USB C at first, but this is proving to be a lot more trouble than expected. The problem is that everyone thinks that USBc can provide power. With the pi power brick you cannot power two external drives, and I'm not sure if the PI can deliver enough power to the ports anyway. Despite looking I cannot find any adaptor cable that gives USBc To sata and NOT with power as well. I would prefer to power the drives separately rather than via USBc. So at the moment I've got to use a powered USBc hub which is not ideal as both drives will be using one USBc port. Perhaps PiHut could produce a sata to usbc converter with separate power for drives. The other thing is that the Pi4 doers run much hotter than I like. (the heatsink is too hot to touch) Adding the heatsink helped a lot, but I would not consider running the PI4 on heavy loads without a fan as well. a tiny 30mm fan brings the temp down to just over 60C so it does not need much. Despite my dislike of USB power use, it's going to make a VERY potent SBC for all sorts of things. I've a couple of projects in mind already, a replacement NAS unit, and a simple PC for the workshop are two easy projects to start with.”
