The performance is as the original Pi Zero, but the included wi-fi and bluetooth make it much more useful in gaming projects. Tried with the newest Lakka.tv distro and that worked great. Only gripe I've found so far is that the wi-fi antenna has a somewhat limited range, requiring you to be closer to the router than with a usb-wi-fi-dongle.

I recently bought this to build a retro gaming system running RetroPie. The goal was to build this into a replica NES cartridge and it has worked extremely well for this project. The Zero W has built in WiFi and Bluetooth which allows the games to be uploaded remotely, and I am hoping to use the Bluetooth connectivity with games controllers. Setting it up was simple but did need a new build of the RetroPie image for the new features built into the Zero W. RetroPie works really well on this board and I can recommend it for projects where space is at a premium. Currently I am thinking of using this board to build a simple IR camera system for the garden, with a PIR sensor.

I have the previous two versions as well, but it was quite hard to find a wifi adapter that works with them. With the Zero W the wifi driver is included in the kernel, so it just works. It's not the fastest, but it does the job. If they can't integrate more things on the board, I hope that in next revisions they can increase the performance too.

I was impressed by the time taken for my Pi Zero W to arrive from the opposite side of the planet (UK -> AU). Liked the metallic green packaging too!
