This little device is small enough, cheap enough and flexible enough to end up in a LOT of projects where previously you may umm-and-aaah about “risking my Pi”. The fact that they kept the GPIO pin sockets intact (as well as how little power it draws) makes potential “smart device” projects much easier and cheaper; I can see this ending up in a lot of projects which wouldn’t have been cost effective before. All of its limitations are pretty easy to overcome; a hub here, mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable there and Micro-SD converter cable will get you set up; the only real problem is the lack of availability (not surprising given how insanely high demand has been). The Pi Hut were the only reliable source that I could find to date. At £4 this is one of the most remarkable computers I’ve ever owned – I’ve had more than 60 systems since the early 1980’s and this little things staggers me with what it can do.

I just wanted to connect the pi zero to my home network and the internet. I have played with ubuntu a while ago on my laptop, and that was easy and everything worked straight away. The zero gets less cheap if you want to connect it. I tried a cheap usb to utp stick, and it worked. searching a program succeeded, but when i started to really download data by installing a media player for instance, the system froze and did not come to life. A wifi dongle i had lying around did not work at all. I know i am actually criticizing Linux instead of the Pi, and it probably has to do with the usb devices not being compatible enough, but i am used to windows which searches for a suitable driver. The Pi (or Linux) doesn't even ask for a driver, It doesn't even see the device and says there is nothing available to connect with to my network. I come from Windows, and I am a noob with Linux, and I am sure there is a way to make this al work....but, a whole evening trying to connect a 5 euro costing device, by examining wifi or utp to usb compatible chipsets is to much of an effort for me.

I remember getting tape cassettes in magazines with games and demos on followed later by CDs. However it was unthinkable that you would ever get a full blown computer on the front let alone one that was so capable! It is an fantastic little thing and would totally recommend it to pretty much anyone. Easy to get started but there is so much you can do with it!

Great fun and I was lucky to get one before they sold out. Get the "Essentials" kit as well ~ you won't do much without it. I had great fun setting this up ~ it's now busy powering a Unicorn hat (Grandson is very amused)
