This was my second order from the Fish Society and included these whole whitebait. Excellent fish, in all departments. On my second bag already for these. Combined with excellent customer service, you can't go wrong. I have a third basket pending.

Now in my 80s I wished to relive an eating experience of my youth. I was brought up in Southend-on-Sea in the 1940s/50s where whitebait was plentiful and at home cooked with a dusting of flour and cayenne pepper. To me whitebait is usually no longer than 2 inches with the occasional one coming up to 2.5 inches. What I received were sprats rather than whitebait - none under 3.5 inches and a couple over 4 inches. They tasted OK but it was rather more off putting to eat a whole fish of that size. Rather disappointing.

Hi David Soory to disappoint you. Indeed you have to be in your 80s (well, maybe 60s, which gets me in) to recall 2 inch whitebait). And it was probably caught by a wooden boat with a red sail in the Thames estuary. Sadly, no longer. All gone. Or at least, on a commercial scale. 21st century whitebait comes from either the Black Sea (as in Ukraine) or the Baltic Sea. And it's this size. Which possibly means it is more sustainable, as clearly the fish are older and might have spawned. The individual whitebait are clean and fresh looking. They are a good colour and defrost beautifully
