Sound Quality
Ease Of Installation
I have had the Airpulse a100 for around a week now and have played around 30+ hours of TV and music, so whilst the speakers may not be completely burnt in, they are starting to get there. Currently, I am playing using the speakers from the floor (around 2 inches up), which can of course hamper the sound of the speakers (I will eventually be mounting, which can make a difference). The speakers are also around 8 inches away from the wall, on either side of my 55" tv, which is in the corner of the room, Out of the box, each speaker comes in a cloth bag and there are 2 other boxes, 1 containing 2 soft pads for placing the speakers on and the second containing various cables, that can be attached to the a100, including aux cable, 3.5mm jack to aux cable, optical cable and a cable that runs between the 2 speakers and a power cable. There is also a remote. As speakers go, the Airpulse a100 look very nice. They either come in piano black or red, as I didn't really want mine to stand out, I bought the black speaker and it looks very nice. The only real issues is you can get finger marks but you do get a pair of white gloves with the speakers. The size is good, with the dimensions being (h x w x d) 28mm (11.14 inches) x 16 (6.2 inches) x 250mm (9.8 inches), which whilst is on the larger end of size for a set of bookshelf speakers but still much smaller than the Airpulse a300. The a100's give you various connection options, form PC, optical, Auxiliary USB and bluetooth. When testing, I was running optical into the speakers from my Sony a7g tv . For playing CD, I was using my very old Toshiba SD-100e DVD player, running via an auxiliary cable. I have also run used the speakers connected via bluetooth to my phone and TV. The remote is the standard Edifier remote (Airpulses parent company), which whilst ok, is a little small, it would have been nice to have had the slightly larger remote of the a300. As I have said I have used the a100 both with my TV and with music and the speakers lean much more towards listening to music than TV. When watching TV, the sound is ok but voices do feel a little recessed with dialogue becoming a little lost in the mix. You can hear individuals talk but the soundstage often feels to be on the edges of the tv, instead of on the screen. I am sure that a stand and moving the speakers further from the wall would help but I live in the reality where it is quite hard to place a speaker stand, without it getting in the way (one of the reasons why I didn't buy floor standing speakers). Where these speakers come into their own, is listening to music. I have been listening to a lot more music recently, with a variety of genres, from classical, to soul, to rock and ambient electronic and the a100 handle them all very well. The soundstage isn't huge but the as a listener I was drawn to where the sound mixer wanted me to be drawn and it doesn't just feel like I am listening to each speaker individually. I naturally prefer a more neutral, slightly warmer sound stage for music instead of a bright one. I find the sound is very much to my liking. You can play around with the bass and treble and that can effect the sound a quite a bit via too small knobs on the back of one of the speakers. Treble naturally is well handled. For TV, I might up the treble a little but for music I don't like it to dominate and the a100 does a good job. The mids are really good for music, vocals come through well. It is very different to watching TV and a much more positive experience. The bas is generally well handled. As with the treble it can be adjusted, I do like a bit of bass but nothing like beats level, where everything is lost. I found for a mid size room, like I have, these speakers are ideal and I don't really need a subwoofer. Overall, I am very impressed with the a100 speakers particularly for music. They are not cheap but you do get a very nice sound and they do punch above their weight, when listening to music. If you are going to be listening to more music, I would highly recommend these speakers but not so much when watching TV, hence the overall 4 star rating. The sound is really nice and you do get quite a lot of connections which is really gave me more option.
