“Great for Internet of Things projects - a self contained Linux node complete with WiFi and Bluetooth on board, and excellent value at ВЈ10. Uses the same GPIO layout as other Raspberry Pi's, so its usually straightforward to switch designs from previous boards to the smaller, cheaper Zero W. Also, because it runs Raspbian (derived from Debian), there's a world of pre-developed software at your fingertips, including communications, database and programming languages.”
“The board is really powerful for its dimensions, I am creating a portable project and I am having much fun!
With it, you can do pretty everything, I installed 3 OS on my micro-sd: Lakka (for retro gaming), OSMC (for watching YouTube videos and TV) and obviously Raspbian.
The adaptors have a good quality.”
“The only thing holding the Zero back for your "average" user was the lack of wifi, that is now resolved with the Zero W. ВЈ9.60 is still very affordable for what you get but it does feel like it's not ВЈ5 better than the regular Zero. Ok so there is no hassle with a wifi Dongle but that's about it.
Still its a credible device for IOT projects that need to be unobtrusive, like a bird box cam setup. Low power use also means you'll probably be able to run it with a cheap battery pack and a small solar panel.
Again with the Zero the biggest failing is the single core processor as this means new users will be a bit frustrated with performance when using the desktop and browser.”
“Just saving a raspbian image on a sd card, modifying wpa-supplicant, and creating an empty sshd file is enough to have this device working on a wireless network that can be accessed via ssh.”
“Got the starter kit and added solderless header with the installation jig. The PI is small and thin and looks very good compared to the bulky RPI3.
My favourite things about the pi zero kit
- wifi and bluetooth included, reduces external adapters/cables to a single micro-usb.
- the size, this really is a mini computer. makes the old RPI3 look like a laptop.
- can be run from an usb port, no need to worry about fire hazard.
- the blinkt is so pretty, vivid colors, fantastic brightness and no flickering.
How about performance?
- zero input lag using SSH.
- ~45 minutes to compile Python 3.6 from source and install.
- running a python script to fetch Ethereum pricing data from exchanges, and show the result on the blinkts, the requests are fast and I have about 400mb RAM free.
Minor issue with the included USB cable: it got stuck in the power port, the hooks are very aggressive. Managed to get it loose by poking the hooks while pulling the cable.”
“This is a cracking little board with even bigger capabilities. Experimenting with CCTV using my pi zero, I've got a year or so spare so I'd better get a move on!”
“For me, this is the best Raspberry PI for makers and creators that don't need a lot of processing power. Having Wifi and Bluetooth just add to the beauty of it, and being this small, is just the cherry on top of the cake
The possibilities are endless and the imagination of the folks at Pimoroni just helps with that !
Thank you”
