“This is a lovely piece of kit. Assembly of the screen and frame with a Pi B+ is very straightforward. The online guide by Pimoroni makes everything simple. I had no issues with any of the parts - everything just fits perfectly, which in my experience is always the case with Pimoroni products.
The screen resolution is sharp and colours are natural. Touch responses are accurate.
I powered the screen and Pi with a Ravpower rechargeable battery pack. This pack has a smart connector which supplies the required power automatically. It works a treat and makes the Pi and screen truly portable.”
“Having spent 3 months to get another 7" touchscreen working, with only partial success, I hoped the display would work without hassle. I was not disappointed. The frame works well (you must assemble the frame before fitting the display board).
I assembled it following the instructions on http://raspi.tv/2015/new-official-raspberry-pi-dsi-screen-launches assembly video.
I updated the raspian image using
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo rpi-update
may be needed as well. I did all this and everything worked first time.
The screen has a great viewing angle, looks great and is very stable with the frame fitted and works with every piece of software thrown at it including qt5.5 apps that did not work properly on the other screen.
Make sure you have a good enough power supply (e.g. pi 2A) if you want to power the Pi and the display using the same power supply. I am using the GPIO pins which works well (it is the outside first and third pins needed). If using a USB cable it is best to plug this in before attaching the display board to the screen as some of my cables had extended shrouds which would not have fitted in otherwise as they fouled the frame stand.
I believe s/w changes are in progress which will turn the backlight off, and if the display is upside down fix it by going in to /boot/config.txt and adding the line lcd_rotate=2 at the end of the file.
All in all, what we have come to expect from the foundation. High quality at a low price.”
“My wife loves her new monitor. She's going to be hooking it up as a controller for her knitting machine instead of having to use her laptop.
The assembly was easy but the instructions weren't totally clear in parts, especially the indication of where plug in the power leads could have been a bit larger and a bit more definite (it's hard to see that the arrows are pointing to the first and third pins rather than the first and second).
If there was the option for a cheap cable that completely covered all of the Pi's pins, had just enough cable length to reach neatly to the display board and connect to all pins (with some sort of clip to ensure they stay connected to the display board would be a bonus) we'd have gone for that just to make it nice... as would we like the option to get a slightly shorter ribbon cable to neaten things up without additional hacking.
She's been experimenting with powering the boards separately and together with power going into either board... all combinations work, but the slight negative is that there appears to be no way to have the display off while leaving the Pi on. Having the Pi turned on first and then connecting the power to the display causes the Pi to reboot. It would be nice to have a switch of some sort for the display. I'm not sure if there's a way to do this with any other pins on the board.”
“I received my screen today and i was up and running in no time! Both the screen and stand were quick and easy to assemble and unlike other screens i've had in the past, no faffing with a load of settings! I plugged it in and it worked. The display is lovely and sharp and is an ideal size for portability. I also bought a black hat hack3r to go with it which folds neatly underneath and in front of the screen.
Highly recommended!”
“Very simple to assemble, looks good, works well.
Assembly tip: I had to dremmel a small cutout for the dsi cable (to PI) about 3mm cutout as the plate 3 was simply too close to the connector and would have required creasing the ribbon with tight bend.
Perhaps this could be addressed in future versions.”
“The screen is a marvel of the good work that goes on at the raspberry pi foundation. Really happy with the product. The case however I feel slightly (and it is very slight) lets it down. At least from what I received the back piece of perspex was slightly larger than the rest of the pieces of perspex; and if you are anything like me you lose the feeling of perfection. But I can get over this. The thing that let it down most for me was that one of the back legs did not fit into the holes left in the perspex and I had to rub it down a fair bit. Apart from this the casing is beautiful :D”
