“This is a huge benefit and certainly beats the Pi4 way of external powered hub, power supply and cable for hub, USB cable to Pi, USB cable from hub to SSD enclosure, and SSD enclosure itself. As others have noted, the ribbon cable is rather fiddly to install but in fairness it's hard to see how else it could be done. It's worth noting that the base is also a protection for the underside of the Pi board, certainly for people like me who may have bits of wire and electronic components scattered on the desk which can all too easily touch the soldered connections. If it's necessary to remove the SSD there's no need to disconnect and reconnect the ribbon cable - doing so repeatedly will likely damage it. All you have to do is unscrew the standoff pillars and (carefully) part the boards, laying them flat but still connected.”
“The Pimoroni NVMe Base for the Raspberry Pi 5 is a good value and provides a significant improvement over TF/SD card storage. I have purchased four of the NVMe base boards - they all perform well with Samsung, Crucial/Micron, and TeamGroup M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs. They are perfect for applications which require fast and reliable access to NVMe storage. Installation is simple and all parts and spares are provided. Pimoroni packages and ships the products quickly to the United States.”
