“I had an idea of building an arty photo frame as a christmas present.
So I bought the 5.7" Inky Frame to give it a go.
I tried a few photos I had and after a while I found what images worked best, size, brightness, compression etc.
So I am now going to run a backend off my raspberry pi server to deliver a random photo when asked.
That bit is to come but first impressions is it works great.
You do have to be careful with memory, like it say there's not much.
But in theory what I want to do will be very streamline and should just work.
If the present goes well then I may upgrade it later with a better battery pack.”
“From a hardware side, it's good, does everything you'd expect.
The software is a little tricky, but works well once you get your head around it.
My only reservation is that it seems a little finicky sometimes, not working as expected for unclear reasons, but that's a minor point, and I've found nothing better on the market”
“Really nice quality, pre-made launcher is nice and easy to edit.
The getting started guide is really good but it would be nice to have easier documentation to see what you can do with micropython, as not sure what libraries are possible.”
“I've bought several of these and liked them so much I wrote an Instructables article on them! These make a great gift as a digital picture frame which can run entirely standalone without USB power or WiFi with a personalised set of images. It takes 30 seconds to update the screen which limits the applications it can be used for, but the colour display (4:3 ratio) is impressive for an E ink screen.
For programmers it's a useful platform to learn low power techniques. The documentation could be a little better but forum support is decent. Does not appear to be able to wakeup on the application of battery power which feels like a minor design flaw to me. They are a bit easy to knock over on a desk when USB cabled - the added weight of the battery pack helps the stability.”
“Just received my Inky Frame - really a neat device and the online documentation is very thorough, so even though it’s my first time working with hardware I feel like I can jump right in without any issues!”
