“Brilliant OTG. I keep one in my wallet at all times. They work great with Raspberry pi but also great with your phone, especially if you have a beefy phone that can charge via is connector.”
“I'm glad I've ordered several of these USB OTG shims, as they are the so go(o)d for using them on my Pi Zero W zoo. I'm using them to plug-in an additional USB Ethernet adaptor to use my Zero Ws for wired network diagnostics, and other bad things. So I enjoy the small form factor of the Zero W and avoid lengthy OTG cables.
Mechanically, the micro-B side sits and stays very well in the Pi Zero W's USB micro-B socket. The size A shim "socket-plug" then glides into the usual USB device A plugs; it could benefit from a slightly more tight fit.
On the other hand, this allows me to swap and hotplug USB devices without unwanted reboots, as the micro-B side really fits well with the Pi Zero W.
While the Pi Zero W surely wasn't designed with using OTG shims in mind, fortunately, the distance of the two micro B sockets allow to use the power cable with its micro B plug alongside the shim with a socket A type plug. Phew.
I wouldn't give these shims to unexperienced users though, but it's a god-send for us Pi Zero (W) users.”
“I have been doing really interesting things with pi zeros - time-lapse cameras, IoT sensors and the like. My one criticism of their design is the two micro usb slots are too close together (power and I/O). This makes plugging stuff with a normal adaptor a pain and puts a lot of physical stress on your USB ports. That's where this gadget really helps, minimising the physical space taken up, saving you vital millimeters and only costing 2 quid.
Pay attention to the warning above, and don't mess with this when you get back from the pub or you risk having a bricked Pi or trashing your usb peripheral.
I like it so much, I've bought a couple more.”
