“I originally started my family tree using the free MyHeritage Family Tree Builder which proved very easy to use. However, I found that it did not cater very well for adding notes about a person and worse still, I found that it had corrupted my data by mixing up various notes made about one person around different people. I also had reached the limit of 250 people so I was now going to have to pay a monthly fee to continue my research. I decided that I wanted to continue my research but using a good family tree tool based on my PC so after further research, I trialled the Family Historian package. After a couple of weeks, I decided that this was the program for me as it was easy to use with good expandability options from user’s add-ons which are free. I could have just paid for a licence via Family Historian but I found that the package offered by S&N was far better value. For about an extra £8, you get a Family History Guide which is also the S&N catalogue but it contains quite a lot of useful, starter information on researching your family. Also included is the Discover Your Ancestors Regional Research Guidebook (worth £10) and more importantly, a 3-month Gold Personal Premium Subscription to The Genealogist.com; this in itself is worth £39 so effectively pays for the copy of Family Historian by itself. Buying from S&N also gives you support from themselves as well as from the Family Historian site. From the small amount that I have used Family Historian, it has proved to be easy to use with plenty of inbuilt support to teach yourself on how to use various facilities. One thing I did really like was when adding photos to a person as these proved very easy to link in to other people. Also, if you link the faces then you can easily see how a person has changed over the years in the Focus Window. Displays can be customised fairly easily providing the user has some minor coding experience. Although I have only recently purchased this package from S&N, I can heartily recommend this package of Family Historian especially as the Gold Subscription is a great way of getting started without too much expense.”

“Version 6 is as described and I'm very happy, maybe a few minor tweaks to the page set-up and printing options but otherwise excellent. Not yet had the V7 upgrade so cannot comment.”

“Excellent software. Installed easily over the top of version 5. New features and look of software good. Slight problem migrating project folders to newly installed V6 on new laptop but got there in the end. Knowledge base on FH User group more than helpful.”

“Very early days, but first impression is impressive. I particularly like the way it works with separate windows, which, once set up, are readily available. However, in order to maximize its potential, you will need subscriptions to at least one commercial Family Tree database. The charting and publishing choices are good and the various ways of displaying your data are excellent.”
