The 6 million name index is pretty useless and the 1898 town maps only cover 17 places. However, the link to Ancestry is excellent and the links to Family Search and Find my past are very good - allowing the user to check with many data sources. Comparison between data on Roots and data on other sites is very easy, as is import and matching of data. Overall this software meets my needs better than any of the competitors.

I originally puchased from you Legacy 9 in August which was not able to be delivered until late September (no blame attached to S & N) however I decided after trying it that it was not for me being too American orientated and far too many whistles and bells which I felt were not need. After trying out the free edition of Roots Magic I decided to go for that however it too has disappointed. It tries to be another competitor to Ancestry and falls short with once again too much to understand. I started of my reseaches with a very cheap programme called GSP which was easy to undertand and worked very well at the time but I felt I needed more and progressed on to Family Tree Maker which was OK. I feel that the Americans have taken over the market and that there is a need for a genealogy programme which is aimed predominately towards the UK market. I look forward to learning of a programme which I actually like and enjoy using and acts as a partner for my research and not as an educational tool for which I continually have to learn new things.

There are a few additional features to the RM4 which I had on an old PC but, basically, it does almost everything I want. The 'Almost' is because the presentation of Descendant charts and lists is not as user-friendly as in some other genealogy packages. By 'User-Friendly' I mean when the charts are read by non-genealogist people in my living family. The full box-type charts are far too long and labour-intensive when printed out on a standard A4 printer with no tractor-feed. Perhaps the best two features of RootsMagic are (a) the transportability with the USB sticks; (b) the discipline imposed on my researches.
