“If you want to change the sound of a drum then I recommend changing the heads first above all other things. A good quality head from any of the top manufacturers will improve the sound. Their are so many to choose from, the basic rule I follow is the thicker the head the deeper the tone with more durability but the sensitivity will go down a little. The snare batter heads with holes around the edge let the air out and reduce some of the ring so this works well with my vintage Pearl Free Floating snare which has no breather hole in the shell. I like to tune my drums lower most of the time for a fatter sound, this head HD dry and the ST dry work well on my Pearl Maple FFS 6.5 snare with a 300 on the bottom.”
