Very good stay, friendly and chatty staff. Angus the spaniel loved all the attention and fuss. Would recommend and will return.

We had booked a 2 night stay including one dinner and an afternoon tea upon arrival. Upon arrival, we were told that we couldn't have the afternoon tea that day as it needed to be pre-booked! Nobody had informed us of this. Despite arriving after the check in time and having earlier completed an online check in form, we were then told that there was no bed for our son in our superior room (with a booking for 2 adults, 1 child and a dog) and this would have to be set up. The manager stressed that this was going to be a very tight squeeze and we may have to move! This was the welcome we received, having simply made and paid for a booking via PP. The room was indeed too small - yet we were not offered a refund - and the spare bed kept buckling and needing resetting. There was nothing for our dog - and with every other booking at the GF via PP we received a welcome dog pack with treats, poo bags, a toy etc. In fact, the manager complained about PP and the communication with his Head Office in front of us. Even our evening meal booking was wrong and we had confirmed this with the GF during the week. Obviously none of this was our fault and yet our break then started with upset and disappointment..... Thankfully, all the other hospitality and housekeeping staff were lovely. Parking was easy and the breakfasts were great - with a dog sausage upon request. There is a nice atmosphere amongst the guests and many many options for outings with a dog.

The hotel staff are lovely, friendly and make a fuss of pets. The rooms in the mews are lovely and clean but the walls are very thin that’s the only negative! Great location and great food, we had a lovely weekend but not much sleep

Would you like to add any more feedback about your stay? Lovely field, about 2 minutes walk from the hotel, beside the leisure centre which is ideal for dog walking.
We were made very welcome at The Golden Fleece with the dog. The staff were lovely and we were allocated one of the best rooms in the hotel with a four-poster bed! Very comfortable and beautifully maintained overlooking the Market Square. There was a bag of treats, toys and poo bags for the dog too. Sausage treats were made available at breakfast time too!

Hotel was nice and room was comfortable. Offered lots of information about where we could take our dog which was helpful. Food was lovely in the hotel and really accommodating for us to eat with our dog. Friendly staff who made a fuss of the dog and made sure she had treats and sausages etc. Overall a really enjoyable stay and we would recommend this place.

Would you like to add any more feedback about your stay? Avoid room 24
We booked 2 nights at the Golden Fleece specifically to take our dog away for a little break. She’s 13 and has arthritis, so we needed a ground floor room as she can’t climb up a flight of stairs. We arrived early to be told the room wouldn’t be ready until 3pm. When we went back we were allocated Room 24. It didn’t have a window, only an emergency exit door into the car park with small glass panels in the top half. Around the glass panels was black, with dirt and mould. The room was dark and dingy and painted in a dark dreary green and cream colour with a brown carpet, which did nothing to brighten it up. It was a no smoking room but smelt of smoke due to the smoking point being outside to the right of the room in the car park. The main issue we had though was cleanliness. There was dust everywhere, on the bedhead, dressing table, coffee machine, some of the skirting boards, inside the wardrobe, the heated towel rail, lamps. There was a big long stain on the wall at the bottom of the bed, resulting in plaster / paint peeling off. Coffee/tea stains on the wall next to the kettle and what looked like a water stain on the divan base. Something brown on the bathroom door near the handle, that I don’t even want to imagine what it was . I went to reception to explain what we’d found. Unfortunately they didn’t have another ground floor room available. To cut a long story short, we decided we couldn’t stay in that room and packed and came home the very same night. The hotel were most apologetic and said the stain on the wall was due to leak that they hadn’t got round to repainting. They had no excuse for the cleanliness issues and offered us a full refund, but is that good enough. Not at all. Why sell a room in that was in need of painting. Why make us wait an hour to check in when obviously the room hadn’t just finished being cleaned. We had a completely wasted 120 mile round trip which no one has mentioned. The staff were very nice but I thought the hotel was very tired and needed some TLC.

Main hotel reception rooms & restaurant are classic coaching inn, with a contemporary decor. Good. Unfortunately we were in the attached Mews. The bedroom was very small, little room for the dog bed! We had glorious weather, which highlighted the lack of ventilation- & the small fan only circulated the hot air! Suggest 2 of these rooms be knocked into 1, with better ventilation/air conditioning. The room allocation was the only downer. Dining room food was good- especially the breakfast & roast beef sunday lunch. Cocktails are overpriced, but Theakstons blonde was good. The manager & staff were friendly. Location to town excellent, & lovely footpath walks.
