I was bought a night away at the Kings Head Hotel as a Christmas gift for me and my partner. Only upon arrival did we realise that there was no free parking. The receptionist advised we parked in a nearby pay and display carpark that allowed only a 4 hour stay, which meant that once these 4 hours were up we had to move the car elsewhere. Check in was simple however we were informed that the spa had been closed for a few days due to staff illness which might affect our spa booking and treatments the following day. I enquired about the late checkout that had been arranged for us for 3pm the next day to be told it was now at 2pm, which wasn’t ideal as our treatments finished at 2pm and we needed to leave my dog in the room whilst we had treatments. The room was clean and came with a dog bed, toy and treats. We arranged to have dinner in the lounge so that we could eat with our dog, it was mostly nice but there seemed to be a few kitchen mishaps. Including them bringing out the wrong starters and having to wait another 5 minutes after my partner received his food and getting clotted cream on the sticky toffee pudding rather than ice cream as on the menu. All of which however were efficiently dealt with by the staff. Another slightly frustrating thing to note was that the closest grass for your dog was a few minutes’ walk away and was very dimly lit and can’t say I’d have been comfortable going alone at night. The following day we made our way downstairs to the spa at 11am to be met by the cleaner asking if she could clean our room. We informed her that we had a late checkout and hoped she wouldn’t go in until then. The changing rooms smelt of damp and were cold, but after we had got changed, we were shown into the ‘spa’. Disappointed was an understatement. It consisted of a hot tub, steam room, sauna and shower. There were 3 people in there already and it felt like a crowd. I asked my partner before we used anything if we should just leave though he convinced me to try and enjoy it. The steam room wasn’t hot, and the sauna read at 35 degrees celsius! A sauna should at least be double that. There was a note stuck outside the sauna that said it would get warmer once you stay in it, which is ridiculous as it didn’t warm up at all. The hot tub wasn’t hot either and there is no way anyone would feel comfortable sharing with other spa users as it was tiny. The fact that you are allowed 2 hours in this spa is a joke, we stayed for 15 minutes before leaving and I wished I hadn’t wasted my time. I asked the therapist if I could have my treatments earlier and she informed me that she’d had a cancellation and could fit me in at 12pm. The facial and massage were great, albeit in a cold treatment room. Whilst I was having treatments my partner went back to the room and was pestered by cleaners multiple times with them knocking on the door asking to clean. I was purchased this particular break away purely as it had a spa, I can’t put into words how much of a let-down this break was. How this can be marked as a spa break is completely beyond me and advise the managers that oversee the hotels on your website visit the ‘spa’ and see for themselves how deceitful it is to continue listing it as so.
