The hotel itself is quite nice, obviously an older building which was evident from the log fireplaces and uneven floor in the room. When we arrived there had been a mix up with the rooms, we had booked a twin and when we got there the bed was a super king. They offered to re-do the beds, but explained there was no housekeeping, so they donā€™t really know how to do it, so we said just to leave it. We had booked the dinner, bed and breakfast package, the meal was nice and we were put in a separate room to the restaurant, but right next to it, so the service was still pretty good, although it was sometimes difficult to get someoneā€™s attention when we needed it. The bed was quite comfortable, and we slept well. Unfortunately there was no hot water coming from the tap in the bathroom, but the shower worked well. We went for breakfast, again it was nice but they had forgotten our toast, so there was quite a delay, and it was a bit burnt when we got it. When I went to check out, I was given a bill for over Ā£300, because they had ā€œforgottenā€ that I had already paid for the dinner, bed and breakfast. It took some time to sort that out, and it was quite embarrassing when there are people cued behind you. They had automatically put a 5% tip on the bill, which you can ask to be removed, but when youā€™re already at the desk and there are people behind you, I think itā€™s a bit presumptive, especially when there have been quite a few errors All in all, not the worst place, but a bit dated and not well organised. I wouldnā€™t go back

Donā€™t get me wrong, this is a beautiful five star spa hotel. The food is wonderful, the staff are fantastic and the spa is lovely. The walking is amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed the outdoorsā€¦ as far as being doggy friendly is concerned we have some reservations. we have stayed in enough doggy hotels to know what real friendly means. A water bowl in the room does not constitute doggy friendly. Whatā€™s missingā€¦ An outdoor tap so you can wash your dogs down, so you donā€™t have to walk through a beautiful hotel with two muddy labradors would be really helpful. you advertise a small garden, we even had a doggy room adjacent to the garden, but dogs are not allowed in your garden. So every night at 11 pm and every morning when they wake we had to don all the walking gear on to walk out onto the street and find an appropriate place . Incidentally, the closest park does not allow dog walkers, so you really do need to walk off the beaten track to exercise your dog or alternatively they can pee and poo in the street! Personally, weā€™re not overjoyed by that. To truly be doggy friendly you need a small area where dogs can go to the toilet and responsible owners can pick it up within the grounds of your own hotel. This makes such a difference. The staff love dogs and we love our dogs too. But this was not a relaxing weekend because it was not as convenient as it couldā€™ve beenā€¦

We stayed just the one night on our way further north, but were made to feel very welcome and the dog got a lot of attention from staff and guests alike. Very much dog friendly, the hotel is spacious but still cosy and the quality of food is stunning. A treat for us all. Thank you.

Would you like to add any more feedback about your stay? This is not a cheap stay but still value for money - four star facilities , a two rosette restaurant and still a ready welcome for the dog
An amazing two night stay in this hotel with the dog. We were upgraded which made things more special with a balcony and sitting area so Rex had extra space He had a treat, bowl and throw to sit on so every comfort and lots of fuss from helpful staff. There were details of walks from the door as well as places to visit Humans had wonderful food and Helmsley was also well supplied with local cafes many of which are dog friendly There us also a spa and pool - dogs can stay in the room while you visit the hotel facilities which is another bonus. Would definitely put this hotel on the list for a future special stay - helpful staff good food and a happy woof from Rex at the end of our stay!

Would you like to add any more feedback about your stay? We had room 2 which is a nice size suite with a sliding room between lounge & bedroom/bathroom.
We stayed 4 nights and were able to leave the car parked safely while we walked Archie our Cocker spaniel direct from the door. Dogs are allowed everywhere but in the restaurant & pool. A nice room next to the restaurant is set up for the dog to eat with you with the same menu & service. However we left Archie to chill in the room while we went to eat.
