Exterior Water Repellent - Funcosil Facade Cream
Funcosil Facade Cream from Remmers is an extremely high performance water-based exterior water repellent. It's suitable for use on brick, stone and render substrates. Once the cream is applied, the active ingredients soak into the substrate and provide an invisible barrier against water penetration while still allowing your walls to 'breathe'. This means it's a highly effective way of protecting your home from the effects of driving rain and penetrating damp.
Cream vs Liquid Waterproofing
A cream provides a longer contact period with the surface that allows for deeper penetration. This is particularly important when it comes to bricks that are slower to absorb. With liquid-based waterproofing products, you always get some run-off and only limited contact time with the surface making them less effective.
As a professional water repellent, Funcosil has been designed so that the active ingredient penetrates as deeply as possible into the facade. This provides optimal protection against the absorption of water and pollutants as well as damage caused by frost. The exterior of your home is protected from damage.
Proven Lifespan
Funcosil FC has a proven lifespan - it can provide waterproofing protection for decades. This long-term impact is due to the high concentration of the active ingredients and its ability to penetrate deep into the wall.
Reduces Heat Loss
Once applied and allowed to dry, this masonry water repellent makes the substrate waterproof but also reduces heat lost through it by up to 28%.
The upshot is that over the coming months your walls will continue to dry out and become increasingly good at protecting your home from rain as well as insulating your house from heat loss. You will experience an amazing reduction in heat loss through the walls that in turn will reduce fuel usage, cutting your energy bills.
The product is non-toxic, safe and even helps reduce future growth of algae and lichen on your walls as there is not enough water available for them to grow.
Applying a Facade Cream
The waterproofing cream is easy to apply by roller, spray or brush in just one coat. You can apply it straight from the bucket. The creamy consistency means that it can be applied without run-off loss (like you can get with liquid-based repellents) and can therefore be applied overhead.
The initial white layer that helps you see where the cream has been applied, disappears completely after approximately 10 to 20 minutes.
Condition of the Substrate:
The substrate must be in sound condition before you apply the Funcosil Facade Cream. Any structural defects such as cracks, cracked joints, defective connections, rising damp and hygroscopic moisture must be remedied first.
NB: The substrate must be clean, dust free and dry. Temperature of the material, air and substrate: from min. +10 °C to max. +25 °C for a minimum of 24 hours.

I applied it with a natural bristle paintbrush to a sandstone gable that faces the prevailing wind. The surface is too irregular for a roller. It was bonded in 1840 with pure lime mortar. Eight years ago I repointed with lime mortar, and skimmed same over the surfaces of the stones. The cream had the effect of only slightly reducing the absorption of rainwater.

So happy I came across this product during my research. More than happy with it. We've used it to seal a north facing, Ham Stone wall, which takes the full force of driving rain. So far, so good! The inside of the wall which has always been damp to the point of wet, has dried out for the first time ever. We haven't been through a winter yet, but we've had rain and it's fine. I feel confident it will hold out through the winter. Not sure if it will need another coat next year but may give it one just to ease my mind. Brilliant.

Our house was built in 1974 of brick. As we live on the North Wales coast we sometimes get horizontal rain storms which soak the bricks and allows moisture to collect in the cavity. In extreme weather, as experienced in February 2020, the rain was so intense it came through the inner cavity wall. On doing extensive research I came across the Masonry Protection Cream sold by Permagard. It is a bit like covering your body with white suntan cream which gets absorbed into the brick. Just had 2 days of serious rain with no problems with our wall. It is very easy to apply and would highly recommend it.

Good product, easy to use. I cannot comment on its effectiveness, it is too early to say.
