There are some great things here, notably: - the introductory overview chapter with some fascinating photos and well drawn (though rather small) maps; - the depth of the photo research; - one or two nice, detailed, explanations of German vehicle returns, eg for the 26th Panzer Division; - the colour plates at the back and of tactical markings; - a couple of fascinating accounts of combat actions eg at Cecina 1/7/1944. But overall it's a disappointment and were it not for my respect for the authors' passion and research, I would have given it two stars. Some issues ... - half of the 246 pages are given over to Tiger tanks with dozens of very similar photos and captions showing vehicles abandoned on roadsides, often destroyed by their own crews. Once you've seen a few of these and got the message about how most Tigers were lost, the next 50 or 60 examples add very little to your understanding. Far better to have had more detailed explanations about particular actions, information about crewmen, as well as some 'then and now' photography. - the other topics (Elefant, Wespe, and demolition vehicles) seem to have been chosen rather randomly as make-weights for a book mostly about Tigers. The authors say their aim is to produce more volumes, presumably to cover Pz IV, Stug, and all the other vehicles one would want to read about. I might be up for one more volume at this price, but even as the owner of many books on the Italian campaign, that would be my limit. - in the end it succeeds neither as Tiger-porn (yes, I know there' a big market for that, better just to do a book 'Tigers in Italy') nor as a rounded examination of how German armour operated in Italy. Perhaps a better treatment would have been tanks in Vol 1, tank destroyers, half tracks, armoured cars, etc in Vol 2. So while I very much valued some of the illustrations and text, it really doesn't come up to the high standard set by books like 'Panzer in Berlin 1945'.
