Dear Lee Archer I was very pleased to discover Col Gerhard Barhorn’s Historical Luftwaffe Record as a fine testimony to the famous Air Ace he was. “Das vergessene As”. I had great pleasure to serve as a Royal Air Force Aeronautical Engineering Officer at RAF West Raynham and served there in support of the “Kestrel” Tri-national (UK, German and USA) Evaluation Squadron. I met Col Barkhorn at our Officers’ Mess social functions, what a cheerful, outgoing gentleman he was. One evening, whilst socializing, I approached him and “So what do you think of our new “Kestrel” VSTOL aircraft?” with a jovial twinkle in his eyes he responded “well, when you consider the cost of one “Kestrel” aircraft could buy a Squadron of “Spitfires”, I would probably choose a Squadron of “Spitfires”. That comment will stay with me in his memory. I was so saddened to read of his tragic automobile accident, which included his dear wife Christine which, coincidentally, was the same name as my wife who died on 2 Feb 2019 (One year ago). NOTE: the P1127 “Kestrel” was subsequently renamed “Harrier” and Royal Naval versions an Royal Air Force versions later played a major role in the 6 days Falkland Islands conflict. Just think the famous Air Ace Colonel Barkhorn could have landed at an Autobahn Tankstelle, refueled with Diesel and carried on with operations. “Zum Voll!” und “Per Ardua ad Astra” Squadron Leader Ramon John WILLANS RAF(Retd)
