Tremendous photos. Not a good OOB for the Germans. My fault that I did not notice that the text was in French, not my native language.

My copy has finally arrived through the Covid fog. It is impressive and adds to the works of Deprun etc. However, from a personal perspective I must admit I was a little upset by the lack of any textual reference to 143 Field Regiment RA which was in the battle from Cristot onwards. Also the lack of photos of 25-pounder field guns which were possibly the only armament in which British weapons were superior to German. My personal interest is that my father was a battery commander in 143, the only artillery regiment which served with the 49th Division from Iceland in 1940 to the end of the war and who wrote a very brief history of the regiment before returning to civilian life.

You may, like me,already possess Fontenay-Rauray by Deprun and wonder whether an even bigger book on the same battle is necessary, possible even. Having pondered whether it was worth 50 quid to find out,I realised that I wouldn’t rest until I knew, so took the financial plunge. The answer is an emphatic Yes.This book, while not neglecting the German side, gives a lot more emphasis on the 49th Division, and in micro-detail.Well illustrated & with excellent maps, it also has eye-witness accounts not published elsewhere. OK,there is some crossover & it’s in French but don’t let that put you off, so while 50 quid might seem a lot, for a book of 450 pages of this quality, in my opinion it’s actually great value for money.Highly recommended. If Normandy is your thing – buy it
