This work does collect information from veterans of the unit but is lacking in new German documents that have more data on the unit's tank and anti-tank kill claims and losses. Also as regards color illustrations the unit emblem after Kursk was never used green or yellow colors since the new CO von B.family Knight on a Horse emblem used RED as von B told me when he sent a color drawing to me.

This is an excellent book and although expensive it's very good value for money from the first page to the last. I can't think of a single photo in this book that I've seen published elsewhere and the text is first rate throughout. I bought this book to learn about 505 and as a modellers reference to help me construct my 1/35 Tiger 1 and 1/16 scale King Tiger kits. The book fulfils both ambitions perfectly.

Thorough and well organized, using the official war diary of the unit and interspersing personal vignettes of unit members. Easy to read and gives a good insight into the day-to-day experiences and challenges of a tactical Wehrmacht armored battalion on the Eastern Front. The coffee table format is perfect to constantly return to the book. I must admit I already knew much of the history of my father-in-law Oberleutnant Majuntke, but was wonderful to have the history of his service with schwere Panzer-Abteilung 505 put into a broader context. Were he alive, he would be honored and pleased to see his foreword to the book.
