“Very well researched and a judicious combination of photographs, organisational data and narrative history. The maps are attractive but not as informative as they might be. Also, the authors barely reference the fact that the 'Sturmpanzer' was originally intended to be operated by the Assault Artillery, until Guderian was appointed Inspector General of Panzer Troops in spring 1943 and made his successful grab for all the heavy assault gun and assault howitzer designs then under development. It is striking that in the German after-action reports cited by the authors, as often as not the 'sturmpanzers' are referred to as assault howitzers, which of course is what they were.”
