I agree absolutely with “John W”. A huge modern treatment of the subject. But oh oh so bland in layout. Brilliant if published in the 1960’s, but my goodness! Did they not look at the “Panzer Colors” series done all those year’s ago. They had a perfect blend of pictures, and colour artwork. Where are the pages of markings and emblems in this book?. Nowhere to be found, just an odd small box here and there!. The pictures are plentiful no doubt, but again too many fall into the usual trap of showing early pre-war Panzers, (most modern books about the Panzerwaffe tend to be heavily loaded with “early” pre-war Panzer pictures). It’s such a bland book. It should have been a winner. It should have had all the virtues of “Panzer Colors” and more. Instead one definitely needs to hold onto those early books as a companion for this one.....

This is a comprehensive examination of the paint colours and camouflage patterns used by the German armoured forces from the early 1930's until the end of World War II. Chapters covering national insignia, unit emblems, tactical symbols and vehicle identification codes round out a hefty tome that should prove an excellent reference source for historians, enthusiasts and modellers alike. Hundreds of period black and white photographs are backed up by a lenghty section of full colour side profiles that accentuate the descriptions given in the text and photo' captions. As with most niche titles that have been adapted for the English language the translation can be a little 'off' sometimes, however it never obfuscates the intended meaning of the author. On the face of it the price is high (£89.99 at time of writing) however, considering the depth of research involved and the many years of effort required to put a book like this together (and the fact it's aimed at a niche market), I for one feel it's well worth the asking price. Ultimately this book is a fine addition to the literature on the subject and well worth your attention. As for Panzerwrecks, their service is exemplary, they really are very, very good at what they do, highly recommended.

I have mixed feelings aout this book, and probably rate it at 3.5 stars. It is a very good book, but it is not unfortunately a "one stop shop" for German camouflage and markings. The section on camouflage and paint is very good, and supported by some very good and well captioned photo's. What in my opinion lets the book down is the section on unit and tactical markings. You would expect a modern book including a long colour section to include colour pictures of the panzer division unit markings as wel as other unit markings and tacctical markings. It doen't. Not all Panzer Division/armoured unit markings are menioned, although there are some descriptions in the text. Hardly any mention of Stug/Panzerjager units. No colour pictures (a few black and white but not comprehensive). Is this an oversight? It could have been done with a small number of colour pages in the colour section at the end of the book. Thus is done in much more detail and much better in the old but stll reliable Panzer Coours 1-3. Despite this failing it is a good book, with a large number of very good and well captioned photo's and interting discussion on a number of issues. It is just frustrating that it could and should have been a much better book with a few tweaks. When used with Panzer Colours 1-3 I would say you get a pretty good overall picture.
