Does it’s job well. Had no water source other than muddy puddle and did a good job. Does seem a lot for the money though but then what doesn’t these days?

I have been using an MSR Trailshot filter which works fine but is a little time consuming and tiring on the hands if you need to filter larger quantities of water so I decided to purchase one of these Katadyn filters which appeared to be much simpler in operation. The Katadyn is basically a Hydropak collapsible plastic bottle with a micro-fine filter that screws in to the top. It is very light weight - 72g for the 1 litre bottle version, compared to 167g for the Trailshot - and the bottle compacts down when empty so storage in your bag is easy. You can drink straight from the bottle or transfer the filtered water to a container of your choice. My experience of using the Katadyn so far (during the winter period with plenty of deep, fast flowing streams here in the Cotswolds, UK) has been very favourable - the bottle fills quickly, you screw on the filter and you're all set in about 10 seconds! The filter system works very quickly - gentle compression of the bottle and the water flows out at a rate of about 1 litre in 30 seconds or so (I've not done a timed test but it's quicker than the Trailshot). The main drawback that I am anticipating is in the summer months, when the streams can be nothing more than shallow trickles, the Katadyn will be more awkward to use as it works best if you can immerse the bottle completely in the water source and do not have to scrape up sediment and muck in to the bottle. I think having both a Katadyn and something like the Trailshot will cover all possibilities and enable water collection all year round. In summary, if you hike relatively long distances in areas where there are suitable water supplies and / or do not want to weigh down your backpack with bottles of water then the Katadyn filter system is an excellent choice and I would definitely recommend it. Light weight, highly compact when not being used, quick and effective to use with a very good flow rate it, it is good value for money and should be something you pop in your bag whenever you go out!

I love this product. I used it for the first time on a walk recently. Camping beside a salt water creek I had run out of water the night before and woke feeling thirsty with no local shops or open source of drinking water. I followed the water source upstream through some housing to a bright clear sparkling brook beside a field and followed the Katadyn instructions. It was marvellous, refreshed having drunk almost a litre hoping that the filter would work as promised. It did. After porridge and coffee I drew three more litres for the long walk home that day. It worked beautifully and I have confidence in using it again.
