Osmo 420 UV Protection Oil Extra Clear Satin has been designed to protect and enhance the wood's natural colour whilst slowing the greying process by 12 times compared to untreated wood. Osmo 420 Extra is ideal for vertical joinery such as windows, doors, cladding etc, the natural oil based microporous finish does not crack, flake, peel or blister.
Osmo 420 Extra Clear Satin UV Protection oils is a transparent oil-based protective finish for exterior wood. The 420 Extra version contains a biocide to prevent the growth of algae, mildew and fungal attack. If you want the version without a biocide please go to Osmo 410 UV Protection Oil. The microporous surface allows the wood to breathe whilst reducing swelling and shrinkage.

Please note that Osmo Extra UV Protection Oils are also available with a light pigment, which will further improve UV protection; Osmo UV Protection Oil Tints in Spruce (424), Oak (425), Larch (426), Douglas Fir (427), Cedar (428) and Natural (429), please see the UV Protection Oil Tints listing for more details. Please note that the pigmented versions will always offer significantly better UV protection than the clear finishes. Osmo UV protection can also be used as top coat on already coloured treated wood which have had a coat of Osmo Natural Oil Wood Stain, Osmo Wood/Decking Oil, Osmo Country Colour or HS Plus, in this situation the Osmo UV-Protection Oil will extend the intervals between renovations significantly.

As a self-priming finish, Osmo 420 prevents the greying process on vertical surfaces with a UV protection factor 12 in comparison to untreated wood when two coats are applied. The Osmo 420 contains active ingredients that prevent mould, algae and fungal attack. When applying a maintenance coat simply apply without sanding which makes it an easy and seamless application.

Key Product Features and Benefits:

Microporous breathable finish that doesn't crack, flake, peel or blister
Easy to maintain with no sanding back required before further applications
Extremely water and dirt resistant
Significantly reduces wood swelling and shrinkage
Enhances the natural character of the wood
420 contains biocides to protect against algae, mildew and fungal attack
A UV Protection factor of 12 compared to untreated timber (with recommended two coats)

Suitable Applications:
Osmo UV-Protection Oil 420 Extra is ideal for all vertical exterior wood surfaces: doors, windows, window shutters (dimensionally stable elements), carports, timber cladding, balconies, fences, pergolas, and summer houses (dimensionally unstable elements). It is also suitable for bamboo poles (e.g. in screens). Nb.UV protection oil should not be applied directly to horizontal surfaces or surfaces with less than a 15° slope otherwise water will not run off and will eventually permeate the coating. We would recommend using Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain for these applications.

Key Ingredients:
Osmo UV Protection Oils are based on natural plant oils (sunflower oil, soya oil, thistle oil and linseed oil), siccatives (drying agents) and additives, 420 biocidal active ingredient: Propicona- zole. Dearomatized white spirit (benzene-free). This product fulfils EU regulations (2004/42/EC) according to the VOC content of max. 400 g/l (Cat. A/e (2010)). Detailed declaration of ingredients available upon request from Osmo.

How to Prepare the Surface:
When applying Osmo 420 UV Protection Oil, the wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%), avoid applying to surfaces above 35°C or below 10°C. Osmo 420 UV Protection Oil is ready to use, please do not thin. Stir well before use. Clean old microporous stains thoroughly. Any old paints and lacquers must be completely removed. It is always recommended to wear a dust mask during sanding. To help with absorption and ease of application do not sand surfaces finer than P120.

Fresh wood containing extractives and especially exotic hard wood needs to weather off (for approximately 6 - 8 weeks) after installation, pressure treated timber should be allowed to weather for a minimum of 10-12 weeks minimum. This allows the wood to becomes absorbent and the wood finish adheres optimally. A base coat with a coloured finish is always recommended, e.g. Natural Oil Woodstain or Wood/Decking Oil to give the best UV protection.

For renovations, clean old microporous wood finishes thoroughly. Clean and refresh already greyed or weathered wood at the same time with Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel. Th

I chose Osmo UV Protection Oil Clear on the recommendation of my sister who lives on the Isle of Skye. I treated my new oak doors and windows with two coats this winter so it's a bit early to know the long-term benefits. However, the initial effect is very pleasing, the oak has a slightly darker tone, but not much, and it gleams nicely. Any rain falls off immediately. The big advantage will be in three or so years when I would be thinking of a renewal coat. No massive preparation needed, perhaps a light sanding and then apply. In conclusion, the oil is a natural product which is easy to apply, works well, my sister says that it continues to work well even under the harsh conditions of north Scotland, and can be renewed with little effort. I could not find it in the shops near me (north-west France) so bought it from New Venture Products. It arrived in TWO DAYS.

I've used Osmo many times in the past for Oak floors and have used this UV protection version for a car port and it works really well stopping the Oak turning grey in the sunlight. Easy to use and it might appear expensive, especially when you put the first coat on and the wood soaks it up, but a second and even third coat goes much further and besides it does last a long time (I have some oak floors that were coated 10 years ago still looking good.
