“Appalling, my grand-daughter's insurance was cancelled apparently as a result of information from a black box. This is quite amazing as she was at university in York and her car was parked up and not used in Stourbridge, West Midlands! A review of Facebook reveals that this is a common occurrence with young drivers and I would therefore suggest that Smartmiles is avoided like the plague.”
“Stay clear!!!
Cancelled my policy over vehicle change even though it said nothing about this on paperwork and refusing to refund money taken incorrectly real con artists.”
“Smart miles is a bit too strict!!! You have to have a box fitted into the engine. Its like being at school. I completely agree on having good drivers on the roads, but they score you on your braking, your acceleration, the time of day you go out (as you have a kerfew in the first year with them when you cannot drive your car between 10pm and 5am). Your speeding (which is not a problem). My problem is the acceleration and braking as if your not 100% accurate then your total scoring is knocked down, which makes you look like a terrible driver and as someone who as just passed my test, there will be a few hiccups, I am a safe driver, they are just harsh with markings. I wouldn't use this company again. It also marks your journey, so the advantage is if your car were to ever be stolen you could track where it was using the smart miles app.”
“Difficult people to deal with, 1st off they sent an ill informed installation engineer who reported my car as non standard, untrue, it does have factory supplied extras fitted. The software is very crude and infantile, I drive very gently yet I get heavily penalised for picking my wife up from work after 22h00. The Station is only 1 mile from my home the streets to/from the station are exceedingly well lit yet the penalty for just doing this very small mileage is disproportionate. Similarly, due to the rail strike I have had to pick my wife up from work this last week meaning my mileage estimate may be wrong on a linear scale. The software measures acceleration, braking, speed and time of day and gives no account of roadcraft, experience, simply is a measure of four parameters which are pretty meaningless and in the case of time of day is frankly ridiculous, what about motorists in Northern Scotland in the winter it is usually dark by 16h00 and doesn't get light until circa 10h00. Do those motorists get penalised more because the reason is because the majority of accidents happen during the hours of darkness!
Would I renew with them, most probably not, I can see the use may be beneficial for limiting younger drivers since the statistics they are the greatest area of risk. I am 67 years old have driven many many hundreds of thousands of miles all over the world, have maximum no claims bonus, it is more than 35 years since I even had a speeding ticket let alone an accident.”
“The whole experience with Smartmiles has been less than satisfactory. On initial vehicle, box wasn't fitted correctly. Changed vehicle after four weeks, Smartmiles didn't contact me re a new box (I had to chase the box installers). Smartmiles then write to me on two occasions threatening to cancel cover and charge me £45 for the privilege (I did contact them after letter one), Finally sorted out. I'd hate to think how they would deal with a claim if they can't sort out the basics.”
