Hey everyone - I'm 22, tried the Mooncup once and had a mixed experience with it which I thought I would share. There are some great upsides to it as expected, I definitely believe it has the potential to be as great a period product as many people feel it is - but I have to be honest about the reservations I have about the usage learning curve after trying it. So I was keen to try it after a few friends recommended it and said it had changed how they deal with having periods. I've never been keen on pads and tampons, I find regularly changing and dealing with the waste fairly gross so I was keen on the idea of how the Mooncup would eliminate this. Trying it for the first time, I had pretty much no trouble inserting it, and wearing it for several hours it was as comfortable and easy to forget about as everyone was saying, so this was great! For me, not feeling the blood leaving my body actually relieves a lot of the nausea and even pain from menstruating, so this is a great benefit without the downside of worrying about the bleached cotton in tampons. So while it was in for quite a few hours it was very comfortable and effective, definitely the best period product I've experienced. However, when it came to taking it out, I really had an ordeal. It had moved a lot further up inside me than I had placed it, to the extent I actually could only just about reach the end of the stem. I was really panicked at it being so far inside me (and the Mooncup is not that small of an item either), and it took a serious amount of effort and overcoming the distress to work out a very unfamiliar situation in getting it out. It did actually take over 5 hours, most of which was spent in tears :(. Just to emphasise, it was not causing any physical pain or discomfort to me, this was just the stress of trying to get it out when I had not done so before. I eventually figured out how to move it out (basically Kegel muscle pushes), but it was still a slow and difficult process. I was extremely cautious about causing an internal infection so was washing my hands very regularly throughout, and also very worried about causing a harmful internal pressure change in the cervix or pelvic floor, so I was working extremely slowly and carefully with the seal. At the end of the day, I got it out, I feel like I learned more about the right way to do it, and can confidently say that it did not cause any injury or infection to me. However, it was not worth such an emotionally and physically draining ordeal. So while I feel like I've learned a fair amount about how to use the Mooncup, and know that it can offer some great benefits, there are some aspects to it that give me reservations about trying it again and risking similar difficulties. One aspect of the design I am not sure about is the stem - when I used it I placed it as low as possible, with some of the stem on the outside. I am pretty sure that what initially caused it to move further inside than I had placed it was the stem pushing against clothes/underwear eg. when sitting down. I don't know how I would avoid this problem again - the instructions advise not cutting the stem until you are confident with the placement and seal, however obviously having tried it only once with problems I can't really say that I am, and am concerned that if I did cut the stem so that I could place it lower inside then I would have even more difficulty removing it if it moved further up again. So this is making me feel less sure about trying it again, despite the benefits. Overall, for me so far the difficulties have outweighed the benefits unfortunately. I would love to be able to use it as easily as many people say they have, as it seems like a much better alternative for periods in many ways. However I am struggling to feel sure about trying the Mooncup again yet, as there are aspects I have yet to figure out that don't feel worth repeating a negative experience to find out about.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We’re really sorry to hear about the difficulties you experienced removing your Mooncup menstrual cup after it had risen up during use, and can of course understand this being disappointing. You’ve done the right thing to take a break from using your Mooncup® for now. If you wanted to explore this further the best thing would be to get in touch directly with our friendly Advice Service, run by medical health professionals, at advice@mooncup.co.uk. They will be able to run through some questions with you to see why this may have happened and from there can provide tailored support to help moving forward.
Admittedly, I found this tricky and frustrating to use the first time, which led to me abandoning it for a couple of months. But having tried again last month, by the end of my period I was feeling much more confident and had used it successful throughout. It is a little tricky, but pain free and using it makes me feel good, like I’m doing a little extra to help the environment. Once it’s in, I can’t feel it at all, unlike tampons where sometimes I know it’s there. I’m actually looking forward to using it this month, bizarrely! Persevere, it’s worth it.
