“My first set top box, which I mostly wanted in order to pause and rewind live TV, also to record programmes. It does these very well, but it does so much more. Most impressed that I can cast programmes from my tablet to the box, and also - just for fun - control the box by voice. Excellent value for money.”
“Does nearly everything I wanted it too.
I can't get the remote to turn my Hisense TV on and off, despite there being possible codes for and I can't get Netflix on it and I have looked everywhere including the inbuilt app finder.
Apart from that it was a doddle to set up and the guide works well with a small screen showing the current program. The big thing for me was that my previous one didn't have wi-fi and my work around had stopped working so I can now use this for all my tv watching but still have to have the TV remote to turn the TV on.”
“All in all not bad. There are a few irritating features with this model, one of the very many Humax recorders I have had over the past decades. Without going into the minutia of the rights and wrongs my opinion is it deserves 4/5.”
“I didn't really need a new recorder as I already have an FVP-4000T and a now little used and very old Fox T2 but was intrigued by the adoption of Android TV as I already have a Sony Android TV and it would be something to play with in these difficult times.
Initial impressions are very good, it was easy to set-up, the picture and sound quality are both good and it shows much improvement over the FVP-4000T which I have been disappointed with due to excessive heat, slow response and frequent lock-ups.
I haven't done much with apps yet but I do have two issues:
1. My FVP-4000T (and the Fox T2) let me access recordings from other network devices - eg. recorder attached to another TV, Windows Laptop and even a Humax H3 - so far I have not been able to find a way of doing this although using the File Commander App I can access recordings from my Windows laptop. Is there a DLNA Server App which I can download?
2. On my Sony Android TV there is a standard 'Video' App (also on my Android phone) which I can use to play content on local network devices - I expected the Aura to have this App but cannot find it although I have downloaded VLC which provides similar functionality.
Other minor comments:
a) When I Stop playback of a recording it does not remember where it was when I press Play again - the FVP-4000T gives the option to carry on or restart. Howver I found that if I pressed Pause and then Back I could continue playing from where I was which is fiddly. I also miss the Previous and Next buttons from the Fox T2 which lets you jump forward and backward in a recording.
b) When I had the FVP-4000T and the Aura in the same room I had issues with the remote controls clashing - previously I have used [press and hold "0" and "OK"] to change the remote frequency, will this work with the Aura?”
“Very very different to traditional Humax Freeview "set top box". We've always used Humax Freeview set top HD recorders, well since the demise of the video recorder and basic Freeview box, and this new recorder is like a millennium shift from the old boxes. Apart from the ability to record 4 different programs at once plus watch a fifth you can actually go back on the guide and watch a program which was broadcast some time earlier. Also there's all the usual internet channels and if you are so inclined you can talk to it as well.”
